Re: LED Lighting

I haven't seen the the ones roozter linked are constructed, so not sure if I'd replace the pig tails. If it's a simple soldered on connection, I'd probably remove the wire and solder on a 20' wire,,, so you have a continuous wire run. Then seal up the soldered on connection with 3m5200. But,,, I haven't seen how the wire connects and just guessing. Easiest would be to just extend the existing pig tail, but that would depend on how well the factory connected the wire.

The rope lights I used had a "needle" type connector that pushed into the 1/2" thick rope, so I just sealed those up with some 3m5200 and extended the existing zip-wire with some 18ga speaker wire. LED's draw little current so you don't need heavy wire. Might be kind of rinky dink to use speaker wire, but I don't see the need to spend $$$ on high quality wire for courtesy lighting. If you are in salt water, it's a whole different story as you need to make sure you use tinned wire, plain copper wire will corrode with exposure to saltwater.

I'm sure others will recommend marine wire, but I'm not. I take the time to seal up the connections, liquid electrical tape and heat shrink tubing, to make sure water does not get into the wire. That also goes for the ends of the strips, dip it on some 3m5200 and let it dry before mounting, so moisture does not wick up into the strip or rope. These lights are not marine rated so you have to do your best at sealing them up from water intrusion.

Re: LED Lighting

Another thing, you need to mount the LED's so they are facing the direction you want the light focused. I didn't realize when mounting my rope lights and had to go back and turn the rope's so the LED's were facing the right way. LED's shine out the tip of the LED like a flash light, not around the LED light a light bulb.

Re: LED Lighting

the seller I bought the lights from has different styles...the lights I posted links to are fully potted in flexible pvc with the pigtails sticking out on 1 end, the other end is not open/exposed.

I took a chance on buying these lights but if I didn't like them...I wouldn't have posted up here and I'm actually placing another order for red led strips for night running.

Re: LED Lighting

Thanks for the heads up on the light direction Dan. I did not realize that and I am sure I would have been cutting a bunch of zip ties.

roozter, Can you post a part number that the seller uses for the potted LED's?
thx

Re: LED Lighting

Ordered mine today! I got 10 of the 10" blue strips and 10 of the white 10" strips. I got the shorter ones so I could plan out how I want the boat to be lit once they get here. I also ordered some replacement LED gauge lights to match the color of the indicators in my switch panel. I'm stoked. I love lighting.
I used some cheesy interior lights out of an old van when for lighting the boat before I started the restoration. Ever try to tie a hook in that kind of light? No way. I plan to use the white strips as courtesy lighting that you can actually see by, and fewer of the blue strips just to look cool for night cruising. (my favorite time to be on the water BTW) :D <---- happyguy

Re: LED Lighting

Ok here is a set of those LED lights mounted that I got from roozter2550's source. They work great. If had one complaint, and I really don't, I would back these with something for mounting. Otherwise they work great.

I got some blue ones too. They are very bright. I am going to mount them where they will be a bit more muted. These are the white ones and I am sure you could tie a hook with these. very bright!

Re: LED Lighting

Here's what mine ended up looking like. Not bad for only a few bucks. I was hoping they would throw at least this amount of light and so far so good.

Here is a thread that I posted in a while back. Hopefully I'll have my lights hooked up this week and will post pics of what they look like lit up. They've been sitting on a shelf all year so it's time to get them in there. I think I bought 3-4 foot strips in blue...
