here is a pic for the one that got me started into the rgb's,,,,, chriscraft254,,, thanks for all the valuable info

Example of 5050 30 lights per meter next to 5050 60 lights per meter.

It appears individual LEDs are brighter on the 30/ strip. Is the overall light output the same, just smoother with the 60/?

I will have some better pics soon, but there light output per diode or light is the same. But the 60 lights per meter will definately be smoother/less hot spots and brighter. How much brighter, have no clue, lol

If you look closely above, you can see the ring of light around each of the diodes. Its just harder to make out on the 60 lights per meter because they are closer together.

Honestly, the only reason I upgraded to the 60 lights per meter is I had 3 different kinds on the boat and the light output/color texture was slightly different. Figured why not get the 60 lights per meter this time. most people would be very happy with just the 30 lights per meter and they are cheaper. But not alot cheaper.

I bought the 5050 60 LED versions for my house. I don't see a reason to buy anything else when you can install a PWM dimmer if they are too bright.

Small correction for nomenclature purposes. Diodes have anodes and cathodes. Those are the two terminals of a diode.

Thanks bruce. The 30 lights per meter really is more than enough for most boats depending on how and where they are mounted, here is a pic of the 30 lights per meter. The 60s are on the boat now, will get pics soon of them. They are much much brighter and definately less hot spots.

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

Just got my "Hitlights 300 LEDs Waterproof Red Flexible Ribbon LED Strip, 16.4 Ft or 5 Meters, 3528SMD Type, 12 Volt, 24 Watt" and on one end there are just bare red and black wires. On the other end there is a black adapter. Looks like it is for connecting to a power supply. If I am wiring this for my boat, do I just cut off this adaptor and wire it to my dimmer? Then from the dimmer to my fuse panel?

The end with the adaptor looks like this. hitlights.jpg

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

the less lights (30 per meter) and the less the number in front of the light strip (3528) the least expensive they will be to purchase but are not the best. These lights are the most economical and will give the average person a thrill once installed. For led inthusiast like myself, I want the best light available and the best look. So future puchases will all be IP68, 5050 with 60 lights per meter, like http://www.ledlightinghut.com/high-power-flex-smd5050-rgb-led-strips.html , which can reach 14.4W/meter, bright enough for our needs.

sorry for the late reply, yes you can do that.
i heatshrunk all my connections after solder, and the clips i used on my rgb's still give me some grief, from time to time, so clipless(lol), isnt a bad thing, just make sure you protect the soldered pieces.

post up some pics:D

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

Hi Guys,

Well I am lining up the projects for my new boat and LED lighting is number 3 on the list. :D Chriscraft I LOVE what you have done with this and I am wanting to duplicate your efforts on a smaller scale. That said I have had no problem finding the light strips (as said on here a couple times they are readily available on Ebay) I have also found the remote and remote controller I want but I have not been able to find your suggested power supply. Everything listed is for home use (has a plug in on it) instead of your unit that you pictured in yout first post. (Also interested where you got the wire and connectors!)

Can you provide vendor info via PM or on a post?

THANKS!!

I have not been able to find your suggested power supply.
The LED strips are powered off of 12V so you use your boat's battery.

THE PWM dimmers are also run off of the 12V of your battery.

I understand all that, I am looking for this -

I also was wondering about the wires and connecters.

Thanks!

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

thalasso,
then you havent seen me go by after dark;). i usually get out before dusk and come back in when the birds are chirping,,,, lol
just let me know when your around i'd be happy to blue on over and hang with the big boys!
my color of choice lately is the amber or pumkin rgb's with the blue underwaters. one word "shaweet"!
i'm always out late saturday and afternoon sunday "of course" is funday:D. we would always welcome you to a raft up!

hey guys, i could use some help on an upcoming event, beaver regatta lighted boat parade. i started a thread.
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=570129&p=3914075#post3914075

please take the time and give me all your opinions:D!

MWBoatFan, i didnt check out the links posted above( thanks guys) but i got all mine thru amazon, but it ended up in 2 orders, 1st the light kit(rgb's, power cord, and remote) and the (4wire and the clips) either way they are available in the states through amazon without the shipping delay, but either way its all readily availible. just make sure you choose the 12 volt lightstrip, cut the wires and attatch to your fusepanel or switch(whichever you prefer) the converter box can be ommitted since you will be connecting directly to 12 volt.

also the "lord of the lights" inspired my journey as well, and his ship still makes me salivate,,,,,:D. i'm sure he will be pleased to have inspired another iboater

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

looks like my set:D!
i have the same remote as well, your gona like em. dont forget to post pics when you get them in.

i got a couple of tips for you,,,, first i know you got the clips as well but if you end up soldering to the strip you will want the small diameter solder. and when useing the clips put a dab of sillycone under the strip to hold it straight with the end of the strip. initially i had my connecters tightly against corners etc, and after a few weeks they started blinking with movement. my solution was to move the connecters about a half inch away from the corner and put a dab of the sillycone to hold it straight and tight to the mounting surface.
cant wait to see them on your boat:D

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

I will do that.
I have a list of to-do's for my new baby. Starting with water temp gauge, then stereo and LED's, still waiting on several things to be delivered. Once I have all my pieces together I will post a project thread and some pics. I am very excited to really make her my own. We named her Firefly so it's only appropriate that she "light up the night"!
