Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

Okay so I think I screwed the pootch on this one (can I say that on here? - oh well guess I just did) anyway I got my LED's today and I got no "black power box) all I got was the lights, remote and the little white control box, looking at the order, that's all it said it came with but hey I am stupid right?
So I have this -

Any suggestions on how I can power this? I was gonna go to radio shack and see if they had something with a plug like this. Is that about my only option?

Just takes 12v right?

Thanks!

Yeah, that's a standard plug you find on a ton of home devices that use transformer bricks. You'll have no problem finding one. I personally keep every used transformer brick that would normally go in the garbage. Never know when you might need a end for something like this, or a transformer for some other device. :)

Edit: Looks like the picture on the face of that thing shows you the + and - wiring as well for the plug.

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

sorry for the late reply, but it looks like all is in order! just cut the wire right before the brick and use a tester to figure out which one is +, then wire it in to a fuse panel, switch, or another hot wire; be careful not to splice into a horn, depth/fish finder, vhf etc,, because you can give the fishfinder static with them on and the pulse of power on the others will dim your lights a bit.

nows the time for the install,,, get a hackin and wackin:D, if you need any advice on placement etc,,, post up some before pics, we will all be glad to help

I have the good fortune of having a courtesy lamp (and switch for said lamp) so I will wire it to that so when I switch on the lamp my LEDs will be powered as well.

I will indeed post up a thread on my installs (yes there is an "S" there) I have a PILE O' GOODIES fixen to go on the old boat.

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

I have not started a thread yet, because I have not started the install yet. I ended up with some unexpected family issues on Saturday and I was scheduled to walk in the Susan G. Komen race for a cure on Sunday so I was up at 5am on Sunday and then napped a bit and worked on my garage. (I am trying to clear a spot to store the boat - and work on it.) I will get er going this week or Saturday at the latest. Where would I start the thread? Here in electrical? Or in Restoration or just in the general forum?

Thanks for being excited about it I know it helps motivate me - even though I am totally stoked about getting this all done.

sorry to hear about the family issues! i hope all is well.
i put my thread in the restore, restoration and hull repair, but yours may be better suited for electrical, electronics, and audio,,,,, unless your gonna be doing more to her:D. You can always get started with the before pics and the back story.
Just make sure you post a link here so we can all follow along.

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

Thanks, it's appreciated!
Finally saw your boat last night, u get a new one? It's not the same as I remember from last year,,, it's prolly just my sometimers actin up, but I thought the name was on there different, heck I thought the boat was different too,,,lol. I put the admiral on point and she spotted you right away,,,
hope you have a safe trip up to the burgh! We really enjoyed our trip up there a month ago.

Tomorrow will tell the tale if that 16.4 ft is long enough to get even color around the front and sides of my rig. With a little thinkin, it's looking like at the minimum 4 sections each side for8 total plus the initial splice , so 9x4= 36 solder points
however that being said I think roughly 2 ft sections 3+ ft apart will be blotchy color at best. That tells me I'll prolly have to make them 1ft sections around 1.5ft apart for better coverage, that will double the splices to 76!
yikes:( !!!!!
hope I can make do with the first plan!

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

Hey guys, long time since I updated this thread, but I would like to keep it going. I am in the process of a design/build project on a houseboat here. I am incorperating some led lights for accent lighting of the interior. I will be using the 5050, 60 per/m rgb light strips. There will be a total of 20 to 25 meters of lights once all done.

This brought up some new questions that I had, being that I am still learning myself. And not being a electrical engineer or electrician of any sort, I did start to look at the (drivers) for the led lights and realized what I had been using on my boat just isn't going to cut it for the larger jobs with the 5050 lights. Basically just comes down to the amount of lights per meter and having a driver rated at a high enough amperage to be able to drive them efficiently.

Also will be using wall controllers instead of remotes for this install. The wall controllers can basically turn the light like 600,000 different shades of color.

Anyway, I will post more on this when I'm not so sleepy.

No new thread. Maybe after the job is done, I will post some before during and afters. Its my brothers boat that he lives on. Just doing some beam and ceiling work, kitchen refurb and new hardwoods throughout. His boats kinda rustic and old, so were staying with that theme with a flare. Leds will be accenting the beams and ceiling around the interior perimeter with some custom trim I've made. .

When I get a day off, i'll post more on the drivers and there differences for everyone.

Re: LED STRIP LIGHTING (Ins and outs info)

Looking forward to the project.
i'll have to dig in on those wall controllers! I'd like to put a few on my rig!
the buttons on one of my cheap remotes is acting up and a few colors won't work on it. So I got 2 controllers floating around.
let me know which ones you get and how they work.

Not sure the wall controllers will be a good fit on a boat unless it is for the interior or put in a dry location. I will probably install two of them on my boat but mouted just inside the cabin. ;) Will let you know as soon as I have one mounted in the houseboat project on how well it works. This is the link to the wall switch I will be installing. You can find them a little cheaper, but not much.
