I know I don't need them, But they look cool, especially when you light up your wake at night. What do you guys think of them? I have seen all different kinds, including ones that replace the drain plug. The drain plug ones, Are probably better suited fo inboard ski or wake boats, or dual engine I/O's, where the outdrive leg wouldnt cover it up. Besides drilling holes into your boat, below the water line, are their any other concerns? Do they seal up pretty well, or do they constantly seep. Probably not the smartest thing to do to my boat, and I probably answered all my own questions. But I am looking for other opinions.

I have two Lumitec Seablaze 3's

I love mine, but I dont really use them all that much either... Mostly at the dock or at anchor to watch the fish swim around them, which is pretty cool. Whether they are worth the money they cost or not is a personal choice.

They don't leak. If they leak, you installed them wrong, or they're junk.. Which leads me to a bit of advice:

Dont buy cheap underwater lights. There are many good underwater light makers, and there are many more cheap knockoff makers. The cheap ones often leak into the lenses, draw excessive amounts of power compared to good ones, heat up to such a degree that they can't be run on plane, and other such defects. Good lights are generally priced from about $150 and up per light, and some get extremely expensive. More money does not necessarily mean a better or brighter light in the underwater lighting market, but it definitely means a quality light. My seablaze's were about $215 per light if I recall, and they are vastly superior to the cheapie's I had on my last boat (which leaked into the lens, eventually).

I would not buy a drain plug light because of the inconvenience of having wiring attached to my drain plug, but I suppose if you keep your boat in the water and dont pull the plug, this is essentially a moot point. I would, however, prepare yourself to be disappointed with the amount of light a drain plug light will put out once underwater - especially if you boat in freshwater, which I'll assume you do based on your location. Some lights look very bright out of the water, but lose much of their effect once immersed.

Re: LED transom lights

Thanks for the reply. Yours look awesome. Where did you find them? My boat has thick barrier paint, so I am sure I will need to sand down to the gel coat, in order to get a nice flat and smooth area for a leak free install. Anyone else Have suggestions for underwater LED's?

You shouldn't need to sand them down. You're going to bed them in with 5200 and that should take up any uneven surface issues. You sand the bottom paint a bit if you have any really big areas that need to be faired, but no need to go to the gelcoat.

I have both white and blue hooked to a 3-position switch. Both colors really attract fish in clean, clear water, but if you boat someplace that's tannic or murky, then lights are going to be a waste of time. These pics were in the murky waters of the St. Johns River (in Fl). When I go to the clear ocean water, you would not believe the light and the fish. Lights up about 15' behind the boat!

Go with a name brand, not the $30 per light knock offs. Seablaze, Underwater LED, etc. are all good lamps. Read the customer reviews and spend accordingly, but there's no need to do the $700 per light route. And don't be afraid to drill that first hole. Just take your time and follow the directions and you should be fine. Mine have never leaked a drop.

I was looking at those too, but it scared me to put a giant hole in the transom below the water line.

The surface mount lights (not the thru hulls) require only a hole for the wiring and not an entire metal collar that is secured from the inside of the transom. My surface mounts took only a 1/2" hole I think, might have even been a bit smaller. I suppose some might consider that "giant" when drilling holes under the waterline on their transom, though ;)
