Re: Legitimate warranty request or not? need expert opinion

I can't really see one thing causing both problems (water in oil, and water in all cylinders) or both happening at the same time.
The oil doesn't get milky from and engine that is not running. So water had to be getting into the oil while engine is running.
The engine can not run with water in all the cylinders, just can't happen.

Here is a service bulletin from Merc on water intrusion you may find interesting.

I think it sank after it had water in the oil. Sinking will not make the oil milky, you would have water in the oil, but it wouldn't mix and be milky.

the block is cracked between cyl #7 and #5 - picture 3, plain as day

appears the head is also cracked between #7 and #5 - picture 2

cause = overheat

usually the block cracks between the two middle cylinders with an overheat (#3 and #5 for example) - but it can happen to other cylinders

the overheat caused the blowout of the head gasket and continued use of the engine in this condition led to further destruction of the gasket thus causing the water to enter the engine oil

based on the pictures and previous experience with SBC, that is my conclusion

That would explain water in two cylinders and the oil, what about all the other cylinders with water in them.

Could the cracked head be the cause for water in other cylinders?

Ok, seems like we need more pictures... I'll ask for a picture of:

- alternator + starter
- bottom of engine
- the other cylinder bank (with head off)

anything else?

I really need to have a plausible scenario before declining warranty request...

Thanx

Overall pictures of engine and engine compartment. Pull distributor cap and look inside for signs of water.

overheat caused cracked exhaust manifold?? - kind of a stretch

re-used old manifolds on new longblock install and one/both failed?? - saltwater use = very possible

my guess is that the longblock supplier will see the cracks and determine that it was an overheat thus voiding the warranty - regardless of water in the other cylinders

Damage caused by an overheat will not be covered by warranty, and neither will damage from a faulty exhaust system.
Any way you look at it, it's not a warranty issue.

Ok, I'll ask for more pictures... As i thought, the warranty is void; still I'm interested in what really happened... If nothing else, me and everyone on this forum will learn what a warranty void looks like ;)

Thanx for the info, I'll post the pictures as soon as i get them...

Maybe he reused the manifold gaskets and they leaked.

I am almost positive that this is not a manufatuer defect.....this has to be user error. While not impossible it is highly improbably a brand new engine would be this way especially with how much rust that is all over the pics.....Im taking a shot in the dark here but the owner had to get a new motor cuz of water in the oil so he got a new long block but failed to replace the intake and exhaust manifolds. well the previous engine might of failed due to bad manifolds and when he used the old manifolds the old problem resurfaced magically......

Since the customer is sending you pics of the motor, I'm wondering if that is indeed the Rapido motor that was replaced. Just a thought. Some motor remanufactures put a solder type of stuff on a freeze plug. When the motor overheats, it melts it. The builder knows then it was overheated.

If it came from rapido marine there should be a stamped dated on the underside of the block when engine was built.

Although their customer service is far from being decent, they stand behind their product. I have two dates stamped by them (thats a hint there).

Head gaskets used is automotive one, fel-pro for marine is black, not blue.
