Lesson learned!

I got a kick out of, I hope you do to!

As I finished tinkering with my outboard, 9.8hp nothing huge, I filled a 35 gal. Rubbermaid Roughneck trash can with water and proceeded to run the motor. The motor was connected to the boat, on the trailer, in my garage.

I flipped it into forward and gave it a little rev. Instantly the boat and trailer started moving forward, towards my house! It only moved an inch or so, but a good lesson none the less!

I guess it could start it moving and if it was on a hill and off it goes.

No hill, just a lite boat. It's a 12' fiberglass v-hull with next to nothing in it. The can is 35 gal. So at 8lbs a gal. thats 280lbs the boat was able to push against!

Did you not blow all of the water out of the bucket?

When I was tuning up the old 20hp Merc I had (and quickly sold) in a big trash can when I kicked it into gear the water would just overflow and if I didnt shut her down I'd get no telltale!

As soon as the motor gets to touch the front of the container the movement will stop. You will loose water quickly so keep your water hose running. This was the way we test our motor long time ago. I never used a earmuff until maybe 10 years ago. It really works fine when you are adjusting a motor or anything that does not require more than idle speed. After that most of the time the water is lost quickly.

Once while drinking I decided to crank up my 35 merc by putting the foot down into a large deep trash can. Got it running making plenty of noise and smoke. after a while the wife grew tired of the racket (and drinking) so she came outside and hollered for me to cut it off. I looked at her and then threw the thing into drive and it shot water up and out towards her. She then went back inside , I think she was upset..........I quit drinking 9 years ago and I think it was a good idea,Im still married.lol
