All of the toys are in a rather large Pole barn with a cement floor and if they want to break in, that's fine. I have insurance for that.

my winter time security

boat in a garage behind my house with the garage door blocked and yard covered in more than 3-4 feet of snow. It would take a snow cat to get to it and then the trailer would probably get stuck in the snow.

I use a trailer lock made by Trailer Keeper. It is unique among these type devices in that there is a bracket that gets inserted between the hub and one lug nut that makes it impossible to simply remove the wheel and replace it with another. I've got it mounted on the driver's side so it's pretty impossible to miss.

The boat is parked just below my bedroom in the driveway and this is a low crime community. And besides, it's an '85 Galaxy: why steal it when you can get a nice boat down the street? Many of my neighbors have something worth stealing.

Keep mine either in locked storage unit or locked garage. Also put a lock on the hitch. Both under 24 hr video surveillance.

For a while, I had to keep it in an unlocked storage garage at work, so I still locked the hitch and put a huge cable lock around the rim and trailer frame. And didn't let anyone know it was there (out near cow pastures in the middle nowhere, not known for ANY crime other than stuff disappearing out of the fridge).

I keep mine on use every Sunday, Sorry guys but in PR is Summer all year round with a temp of 92 degrees . WOOHOO!!!!!!

Spring and summer I keep my boat at a marina that is serious about security.

8ft barbed wire fence with an electronic gate, 24 hours security cameras and live-aboard tenants that look out for each other and your boats. I know many of them personaly as well as the manager and staff. Theft is almost non-existant there due to the diligence of the staff and customers.


At home, 120lb german shepherd, motion detector lights, closed gate with car parked blocking vehicle access to the trailer.

If they really want to they could jump the fence and have a go at stealing something off my boat. I'd wager when they first heard/saw my dog they'd be running for the hills. And if they didn't the barking would alert me.

Either way there is no way to tow away my boat as the drive is blocked.

I have insurance but don't plan on needing to use it soon.

Apparently they will. One local marina here REQUIRES sterndrive locks to be installed on all Mercruiser outdrives if you're going to store your boat there.

I rigged it so that I had 110v running through it.

In Canada, that would constitute "a booby-trap" as it is non-selective and likely to cause bodily harm. That's a Criminal Code (federal) offense just HAVING it, even if nobody gets hurt.

I live in a rural area where the crime rates are low but 25 gallons of gasoline disappeared from my second boat (sitting in the yard all summer). Before the 100 gallons disappear from my other boat, both will get connected to the electric fencer. (Farm fencers are both CSA and UL certified to be non-lethal but give an awful poke!)
