My lift assist cylinder has quit assisting on my 1993 Rude 40hp TE40ELETB. I have read all the posts concerning problems with these troublesome things. My cylinder will hold the motor in any position that I put it. However it is difficult to lift. I tried to adjust the shell coupler at the control lever ball joint and managed only to break it while being very careful taking it off the ball joint. However, when prying the shaft up with a screw driver at the cylinder as much as 1/4" or more, I get no lift assist. I am now assuming that I need a cylinder. I know that I could install a tilt\trim mechanism but before I do that, I would be willing to spend 200.00 on a replacement. Anyone have any Idea other than Ebay (where I have a bid on a used one) where I might find one in this price range?
Thanks for the help,
Tim

Re: Lift assist

hello
the odds of finding a good used one are slim. they were not much when new. for about 300 more than a new assist unit you can buy the T&T kit from any BRP dealer
that top cyl retainer pin can be tough to remove.

Re: Lift assist

You may just need a new cable and shell... It would be worth trying before spending a lot of money...

Re: Lift assist

Gonna try Rabidfish's suggestion first. When I put a screwdriver in the slot at the cylinders coupling and pull up on the pin it doesn't seem any easier to lift. Would this be a good indicator of needing a new cylinder or is my screwdriver incapable of moving the shaft far enough to enable the assist?
Hey Rodbolt, you say that for about 500.00 I can buy a factory tilt and trim for that motor? Do you have a part # for that unit?
Thanks to both,
Tim

Re: Lift assist

OK I replaced the shell today and I still have no assist. My cable is fine. My owner/dealer has told me that the cylinder has lived its life and is ready for the junk pile. My dealer tells me to get a used OMC tilt/trim unit. He believes that I can get this for about 75.00 over the cost of a new assist cylinder. What do you think about this info? Does this sound legit? I look forward to any and all input.
Thanks,
Tim
