Lining out text in MS Word?

When editing a paper, sometimes you want to line out existing text, but not delete/erase it.

I cannot believe that Word does not have this capability. You should either be able to overtype existing words with a line thru the middle of the letters OR highlight the word(s) and apply a line thru any such letter(s)/word(s).

Can you do it, and if so, how.

Use the "strikethrough" command, where its located depends on the version of Office your using.

Select the text that you want to change.
On the Format menu, click Font, and then click the Font tab.
Select the Strikethrough or Double strikethrough check box.

Thanks guys.

That was it. Strikethrough. No wonder a help search didn't come up with anything. I wondered if there was a different term for it. "Help" should not be so literal.

While the answer below (above now? ;)) is technically correct, there may be a better way if you are truly editing.

Use the function "Track changes" and it does just what you are looking for, but with the benefit that the document can be passed around for group edits.
At any point, suggested changes can be accepted or rejected, globally or singly.

Word also has a tracking feature. Under the review tab you can track changes. It will show you what you changed

[edit} OOPS - sorry, I did not see Tim's answer
