Listing to Port, HELP....

Hi all experts!!!,

A couple of years ago I nabbed my dad's old boat for fishing. '85 16' Smokercraft "Big Fisherman" Aluminum V-Hull with a Johnson 40 on it. I hadn't used that boat for years, and the memory is a little foggy, he said it always has had this problem but I can't remember it. Anyhow....

The boat really has no problem getting up on plane, even with 3 (approx) 180# guys and some gear in it. However, as soon as it's up, it's got a helluva list to the port side. When not on plane, it sits nice and level in the water. There are no tabs, etc on it. We have tried shifting all the gear, gas tank, and battery over to starboard to compensate, it helps, but really has no big effect.

Is there something dumb that I simply don't know? Would trim tabs or a foil help? Where we go fishing we really aren't up on plane very much but it would be nice when we are to not feel like we will end upside down lol.

Avoid the foils! Smart tabs.

A 16' alum with a 40 hp engine is not a real challenge. There are millions of them in normal service. Doubt that you have anything major like water trapped in the bilge or it would show up at rest.

Helms (steering) has been moved to the Starboard side in recent 10's of years on most boats due to the torque of the prop attempting to raise the Starboard side with today's cw turning props.

Get a camera, take the following requested pics, and go to Don S's thread as to how to upload pics to the site.

Show side views of the transom/engine, engine trim to the transom (tilt), anti-vent plate location w/respect to the transom bottom, rear view showing the hull at the transom and position of the engine lower unit to that, view of the bottom of the boat including the bow and all. It's not rocket science man. We can fix it.

A prop that's acting more like a paddle wheel (too much pitch or too much damage) will do it, it's only natural.
