Looking at another boat...

Hey guys, all the information was great information yesterday and it's greatly appreciated.

I'm also looking at another boat, a little more expensive, so not sure if it's worth the money or not.

It's a 1991 Glassport, 4.3L V6 Mercruiser, Open Bow Ski 17ft.
http://nashville.craigslist.org/boa/954016970.html

I've had some email correspondance with the seller and it is as follows.

Hello, the hull/transom and everything on and inside the boat are in great shape. Floor is in excellent shape and carpeted. What i meant by tears is only one spot on the left front bow where the seam is comming apart at the top and bottom of the seat. I siliconed it in place, but can be easily repaired. Have recently done basic preventive maintenance this past summer, new prop, seals for lower unit, gear lube replaced, new belts, new bilge pump, new battery, new fuel pump, new carberator, new water pump/impellar, all brand new this past summer. Boat runs perfect and is currently winterized and covered. Thats another reason i want to get rid of it is because i just moved into a new house 2 months ago and it wont fit in garage. I kept it in my old house's garage before the past 2 years, so it's been well protected. The window latch in middle broke off last summer, but i still have window with no defects. Again, very easy fix, all it needs is new hinge. Overall boat is in great shape and runs like a charm.

I may have some of the receipts and boxes left of the parts i bought...not sure after the move may have thrown it all out. Like i said i didnt expect to sell the boat but i have a baby on the way and cant use this summer. The window hinge broke off on the lake one day, but looks like it can be replaced with a new hinge. Looks pretty basic, just havent had time.

I can assure you you will NOT have to invest one cent into the motor of this boat... i've invested over $5000 into it the past 2 years. It's completely re-built and runs like new. I had it serviced with Bill's Marine here in Hendersonville every year and they put in the new parts for me. I was trying to sell for $3500 but no-one responded to my ads, so i reduced to $2K to get some christmas money. It's a steal, trust me... the motor is immaculate

Is there anything else I should ask before I contemplate going to look for it?

look at it and watch for soft spots in the deck. if every thing checks out, it sounds OK.

I would say both are worth looking at. MC KEE is a good boat. I like the fact that it is an outboard. FRED

Do you guys think my S-10 would pull this boat? I'm probably going to go look at it tomorrow and if I like, will be bringing it home.

Both are four cylinders. I'm trying to find a roundabout weight for the boat to measure it against the towing capacity for each vehicle.

I would definitely check the weight of the boat out before purchasing. Getting to the water safely is just as important as safety on the water.

His reason for selling keeps changing. New baby, won't fit in garage, needs Christmas money?

Re: Looking at another boat...

Looks like it could be a good deal if all his claims are true.

Rebuilt motor at a local marina, should be able to confirm.

Looks like there is a ski locker. I'd get down and stick your hand in there and feel/knock on the stringers check for rot. Inspect the transum as well.
Look for cracking in the gelcoat, especially on the transum.

He probably won't want to start it if its been winterized. This is a major issue to me. Have you gone to look at it yet?

I have not. We're going to go this afternoon and take a look at it. He's going to check the glove box to see if it has a total weight so I can compare our towing capacities on our two vehicles.

www.nada.com will give you the weight of it.

I think the S-10 will pull it without any problems.

If it runs like the guy says, it looks like a good deal..

Re: Looking at another boat...

I'm hoping my S10 will pull it. I'm going to have my friend bring it home for me as the trip from where the boat is to mine involves about 40 miles of interstate and don't want to try pulling it for the first time on I24.

Still waiting on weight of the boat.

I had just found that about the time you posted it. Thanks for confirming my thoughts. I should be "ok" with my truck.

Well, I ended up buying the boat listed and drove it home last night. Was an interesting ride in my S10, but not too bad...just...different.

Thanks everyone for the help, it's much appreciated!

Boat infidelity will only lead to a broken home!

Why can't we be happy with the one we got? Must the water alway look more blue on the other side of the dock?

Re: Looking at another boat...

Everything checked out like the guy said. I called the marina that did the work and he confirmed all that was replaced. The owner took the time to show me every part that had been replaced.

He was a little concerned about how well it would start...it had already been winterized and it was below freezing outside. He thought it might be a little slow starting. Turned the key and fired right up. Ran it for a few minutes and turned it off. Redid the anti-freeze and pulled her home.

The cover did have a small tear in it. He said he was pulling it with the cover and one of the bungees came loose, snapped up and tore it. It's in the shape of an "L" and an inch long on each side. I bought some vinyl patch, used some vinyl tape to tape it in place and secured the vinyl patch and tape with silicone. Do you guys think this will hold until I can pick up another cover?

One thing I did miss though while giving it a look over was the fact that the front of the boat wasn't sitting snug against the roller for the hull.

It's only a few inches (3 at most) but I'm assuming that's not a good way for the boat to sit, so what would be the best way to fix that? Move the winch a little closer to the front of the trailer?

As you can see, there is a little rust on the trailer, fortunately, my father is coming up this weekend to help me deal with that. Providing it's not pouring like it has been for the last 3 days.

Here is a picture from the inside.

That beast of a truck in the driveway will be the one pulling it...

Not only did he have a baby on the way, he had a wedding on the way, too. I think he was pretty sad to see it go, so hopefully it will treat me right when it gets warm!
