I just piscked up a 1964 MFG Niagara Custom with a 1960 Johnson 40 HP RDS 22 Engine. Engine was allways serviced and maintained but has NOT run since 1998...I am new to the sport ,not familiar with Outboards at all and need some Guidance... although I am a experienced mechanic and have worked on every other type of Engine., water & air cooled I have NEVER worked on an Outboard engine before and not sure where to even begin....or if it's even worth it.
Can you guys Please Guide me to the right web sites, Manual / Repair Book or PDF Files that I would need to do a complete teardown & rebuild as well as all routine maintenance on this engine.. Thanks, DanO'

If it turns over and feels like strong compression, buy an OMC manual for it. You can usually find 'em on ebay. They are excellent motors! I'd check spark w/a tester (1/4" blue bolt in open air from both leads is required for adequate spark over the plug gap under compression). Drain the carb, supply w/fresh 24/1 fuel (flush the fuel lines too!). Then see if it'll fire up in a barrel w/water covering the impeller 'bulge' on the lower unit. You may get lucky and it'll work just fine. You should replace the impeller even if it's pumping, as 13 years is a long time for the impeller rubber..

If the engine was always serviced and maintained, that old girl probably still has allot of life left in her with out tearing her apart.
Pull the plugs, put some TCW-3 oil in the cylinders, rotate her by hand a few times, connect a battery and perform a compression test on all cylinders. Compression may be a bit low, as the motor is cold, and has sat a while, but as long as the compression figures are with-in 10% of each other, theres a good chance with a little bit of servicing you will have a fine running motor.

In the top secret file of this forum, there is a thread titled "Awakening a sleeping outboard"
It details what needs to be done to get her running safely..
