Re: Looking for the Masters of Swivel Bracket knowledge! very sticky swivel on 1990

Well, That little hole (pic in earlier post) that I thought was a missing grease fitting for the swivel seem not to be. I thought there were threads in there, placed a fitting--and grease wont go in at all. A small screwdriver as a probe seems to go all the way in toward the swivel shaft area so I thought I solved my issue. TODD: was wondering if you could take a PIC of yours so I can see if I indeed have that, or a place one should be.

But...My 115 also has that little hole in the casting (facing foward, 1/2 inch from the upper mount of the tilt piston/shaft) but its just empty. The 115 seems to have only the "mid-way" single fitting also. Hmmmmm

However, my new grease went into the "mid-way" fitting. It took alot and forced out all the black crap at the bottom only. It does feel better! If I could just get some to come out of the upper pivot area, that may solve my issue. I'll keep try the heat again, and work manually over time.

Was wondering if anyone drilled the casting near the upper swivel point, and put in a fitting? Im also tempted to try to wrap something tightly around at the bottom swivel(now that there is grease in that part) in the hope that when attempt more grease, it will force it Upward instead, to the upper swivel. Its better, I'm getting there!!

Did you try working it back and forth while pumping grease in at the same time? Just a thought

HI, Ya a little bit by myself...Will solicit some help to do that, was thinking along those lines also...When initially doing the heat thing, seems just the bottome area thinned and came out...at some point I'll heat the top better, and even let the new grease along with the old work its way down. Once all out, I'll pump in, and hopefully this time it will go up, and down along the whole column.

Thanks

The zerks are not threaded in, just pressed in. To completely remove the steering arm and shaft, the powerhead has to come off.

Nope, power head does not have to come off on the 88. Did mine last year. Hung powerhead and midsection from tree in front yard and swivel bracket and transom mount assembly stayed on boat. Pulled trailer up a few feet and could work on steering arm and tube no problem. I'll try to find pics.

SURRENDER: Wow! Thanks for the info/pics. That excites me. Stayed up till 1am trying to figure my next step here. Can you elaborate a bit? I have mine hanging now in the basement from the powerhead. Can you give me an overall...1) remove lower unit 2) remove arm upper 2 bolts 3) Remove the 4 lower bolts ETC.... I'm guessing.

Does the head and motor mid section then slide off the swivel portion?

Sorry for so many questions...THis is a big help.

You pretty much have it. Six bolts, mid and powerhead upper come off and will hang from what ever you set up. On mine I had to cut the bottom large nut off to get the steering arm to slide up and out of the tube. I had bought a used replacement from a freshwater engine for 50 bucks and it was like brand new. My old one was about finished. Kinda hard to pull the old one out but it came out with a bit of persuasion(small sledge and some cursing). New(used) one came with new plastic bushings and new nut for the bottom. Took about three hours total. My mechanic said he wouldnt touch it due to his insistence that the powerhead had to be removed from the mid to do the job. he quoted me $1500 minimum, mainly because he didnt want to do it.

Awsome...So whats in there?, the bracket part that the steering shaft goes in? bearing/ bushing? Are they pressed in? I'm going to work on this today. Very happy. I just have to raise it up to get clearance to drop the lower unit. Thanks again

Was there a reason you had the lower unit removed when you did this?

Yea, I will take some pics...Just started loosening the upper two bolts...Very stuck, but i got em loose now. I believe the lower unit has to come off due to the fow/neut/rev rod that also runs thru it-it drops with the lower unit..I got all 6 bolts loose now. Just have raise the leg for clearance, as the whole thing is hanging on a chain.

If I remember right, the shift shaft goes up inside the swivel tube

We were referring to the steering arm, not the TnT.

Todd,

Thanks alot for the pics!! Yes, The open hole matches your location..Like I said a tiny screwdriver seems to go way back in there--so I put in a fitting, but it wont take grease. Either on my year this hole doesnt go in far enough, or its simpily blocked. I got to believe i'm missing this fitting on both my 88 and 115, strange coincidence.

The lower has to come off due to this shift shaft, else no way to get that swivel out.

It took me hours to carefully get all the lower unit bolts out( PB blaseter, Tap, Tap, heat---repeat) but they all loosed. I was able to get the unit off even with a stuck crank/driveshaft. I even loosed the Swivel bracket bolts but have not tried removing it yet. Ran out of time.

Will post when I do...and will also take some pics to help out the next! I'm real interested in that hole that matches Todd's where I put in a fitting

Thanks everyone.

Thanks Todd....Hope the fishing was good. Hard to believe. I'm sitting here in Boston in 20degrees! Dreaming of spring already.

I'm curious if you can get some to actually come out the top, from that upper(foward facing) fitting. I'm hoping mine is blocked. But I've gone this far, might as well pull it off. I will tomorrow. Its freed up quite a bit though.
