We have a 19' Sea Ray Sevillewith a 3.0l. Want a little more room for 8 and a little more power. Here's my bowrider options:
1990 SeaSwirl Syder 202 20', 5.0L omc, great exterior and mechanical, torn up seats. $4100 with a ton of accys
1991 FourWinns 190 Freedom (20'), 4.3L omc, good exterior and interior, very good mechanical. $3300 couple accys
1992 19' Dynasty Regency, 5.0L, yamaha outdrive, excellent throughout, $4500

Haven't owned any of these in the past. Yamaha outdrive I especially know nothing about.

From what I have learned on iboats: stay away from OMC I/O's, Yamaha outdrives and Force outboards.

All three options are no-go in my opinion. As DC20 said, stay away from OMC and Yamaha/Force stuff. Also, for dealing with 8 people, you may want to look at something closer to 22ft+. A 20ft'er may be rated for 10 people in many instances, but anything over 6 adults starts to get really cramped with bags/coolers/water toys. I would want a V8 to haul around that much weight as well, because 8 people is a full load.

All the boats your looking at are a sideways trade (no benefit). 1 foot is not going to help you. My 21 foot can comfortably carry 6 people, 8 would be very cramped. Perhaps you should look at deckboats instead they have a more open layout.

Be very wary of a fiberglass boat that age, especially if it has new carpet.

We see a lot of people on this forum get ripped off with "deck over" jobs. This is where the owner just rips out the old carpet and throws some new 1/2" plywood over the rotten deck and stringers, then installs new carpet for a quick sale. The unsuspecting new buyer soon has problems with leaks and such and shows up here on iboats to discover he has been ripped off and has bought a pile of rotten boat with big problems.

If you want comfortable seating for 8 you should be looking at deck boats or pontoons.

It's cheaper to lose the friends than to take 'em boating, besides only 1 out 10 (it's a fact, I did a survey) friends will give you gas money and a V8 will certainly use it...especially with 8 people!

I agree on both posts above! except, keep the Sea Ray for tubing and stuff and have the pontoon be "The mOthership"

Accessories won't add a lot to the price, I'd rather look for good condition first, you can add accessories that you really want after you have the boat.

Thanks. Good advice as always on here. Since I don't want a pontoon and can't find a big bowrider/deck
On my budget, I just need to hang with fellow boat people!

Ok, so if I just upgrade slightly, what is the best of the lot above, add a 1992 Century Mustang II 19, with a 4.3 Mercruiser...very good condition

Aside from a slightly more powerful engine, I don't see how any of these are much of an upgrade. It's the same size boat you have now, but with a host of unknown problems to deal with.

you need a 22ft boat with a V8 Mercuiser or Volvo outdrive or a 150hp+ outboard--read the restoration section here and it will tell you what to look for in a used boat.

Re: Looking to replace our boat...what do you think of these options?

The thing is, i already sold the old SR. A guy made an offer I couldn't refuse, about 10% more than I paid 5.5 years ago. So for about the same coin Ian moving up 4yrs, 40hp or more, and by my inspection maybe 1/2 the hours...bottom line I need a new boataround $4000 give or take.

I would seriously try looking for a deckboat if you want to carry 8 people with any semblance of comfort. No 19-20ft bowrider is going to carry 8 people without being packed to the hilt. Expanding your search area may turn up some more possibilities.

Re: Looking to replace our boat...what do you think of these options?

Well I have decided to keep taking just one friend at a time. So my choices now are:
20' SeaSwirl Spyder 1990 5.0 8cyl OMC
19' Wellcraft Eclipse 1989 3.7L 4cyl Merc
19' Century Mustang 1992 4.3L 6cyl OMC
19' Dynasty Regency 1992 5.0 8cyl Yam

Pretty much have heard bad things over the years about OMC and the 3.7L; and Yam bad things today. So which is the best of these which is the worst in your opinion?

Re: Looking to replace our boat...what do you think of these options?

Why would you knowingly buy a boat with an obsolete drivetrain? There are NO parts for Yamaha stern drives. They were literally only made for a couple years. OMC parts are dwindling. Merc 3.7's were problematic and also have some no longer available parts. I suppose an OMC Cobra with a GM motor would be the least of the evils there but sheesh man, I wouldn't buy any of 'em. You want a Merc or Volvo with a GM motor.

They are all on the 'Pass' list.

Re: Looking to replace our boat...what do you think of these options?

Here's my 2 cents FWIW:

You're in a predicament now. You sold your boat and now are scrambling to find another boat quickly.....which is a recipe for disaster IMO.

A majority of the "pros" here will try to steer you away from OMC and any other obsolete powerplant FOR GOOD REASON. Unless you are a mechanical whiz....and have good connections to find parts for OMC etc.....your boat will end up sitting in your driveway while you wait weeks/months trying to find parts should you have problems with your motor. And IF you find the parts, you'll pay through the nose to get them.

Be VERY VERY careful when buying an old glasser. 90% of them have been neglected and have hidden rot. Inspect the heck out any boat your considering OR pay to have a marine survey done.

Impatience can/will cost you money and lost time on the water.

It wouldn't hurt to actually place an ad in CL stating what you're looking for. You'd be amazed at how many people have boats etc that they have contemplated selling, but just haven't placed an ad putting them for sale.

I found my last 2 boats(and plenty of other stuff) by placing a "Wanted" ad. I placed them in the boats section NOT the Wanted Ad section.

Keep looking, as July proceeds, more boats will be on the market.

People that need the money, don't want to store or winterize, people that are up or downgrading.
Prices tend to taper off a bit too.

But, if you wait till Labor Day, everyone thinks their boat will sell for 10 grand in spring so it must be worth 9 grand now.
