I've used Mercury 2-stroke oil exclusively for the past 11 years. I've been buying it by the case at my local dealer.

Last year it was $96.00 per case. Today I went in and asked how much a case was, and to my surprise it's still $96.00. So I told them to get me one.

They guy brings out a box of 3 one gallon bottles, WTF, last year a case was 6 one gallon bottles !!!!

So I told them to forget it.

Looks like I'll be trying some Penzoil semi synthetic...

A year ago this past winter I bought every one gallon jug of Pennzoil Semi-synthetic Walmart had for $7.00/gallon. It is now about $12.00/gallon but what hasn't gone up!!!

Re: Looks like I'm done using Merc 2-stroke oil

I have one more gallon of Merc Premium Plus from the 2 cases I bought last year at $14.95 a gallon. Went shopping to replenish the supply and was shocked to find MPP at $29.99 a gallon this year. I found Evinrude HD30 locally for $18.99 a gallon but my motor isn?t real happy with the stuff.

Found an on-line supplier of Pennzoil Premium Plus and had a case (6-1 gallon jugs) delivered to the house for $93. Went ahead and ordered a second case of Evinrude XD50 at $127 a case (6-1 gallon jugs) just in case I had issues with the Pennzoil stuff.

Went to my local boat shop and spoke with the owner about oils....he uses AMSoil full synthetic.....he swore by merc years ago, but says the synthetic runs so much cleaner inside the engines he has worked on.....no ash build up and runs clean

I noticed this on my 2 stroke quad....much clener with synthetic

Re: Looks like I'm done using Merc 2-stroke oil

Ya, I walked by a gal of Merc Quicksilver 2 stroke oil for $26.95 in Walmart a month ago and it kinda stopped me in my tracks for a double take.

I'm a 4 stroker by choice, but don't understand why if gas was over $4.00 a gal last season and now it's $2.00, how can they still be getting $26.95 a gal for 2 stroke oil

Just my opinion, but it seems to me this price fixing of 2 cycle oil is a ploy by the O/B industry to force boaters to move to 4 stroke O/B's. The only way they can make a profit is to sell new outboards (I know they make 2 strokes too, but I'd like to see the sales figures of the ratio of sales for each).. I would think the oil companies are sucking up most of excess profits of the expensive 2 stroke oil.

It's crazy to operate a 2 stroke now a days unless IMO unless it's a newer model like an Etec etc.

2 stroke or 4 stroke you still have to use gas.

Not to start a 2 vs 4 war, but I for one look at where the "cost of 2 stroke oil is right now" I don't see the savings touted over using a 2 stroke O/B as to the extra maintenance with a 4 stroke in that we have to change the plugs, oil and do a valve adjustment every few years.

There are plenty of great 2 stroke O/B out there in service, I still feel it's the O/B industry's way of pushing boaters into 4 strokes by keeping the oil out of sight!

i guess the 2 stroke is more user friendly. but the oil price is just making it not worth it.

im starting to want a new four stroke. but if i go etec any day though. its kinda hard on ur wallet especially if u got a old engine thats use more then 50:1 mix of oil

AHHHH the great smell of 2 strike in the morning. Nothing quite like it !!!
I have been using the Wal Mart stuff for about 3 years. No issues to date. Still have around 3 gallons in stock.

I've been going between the wal mart and the synthetic blend Pennzoil at Wal Mart. some times on the older motors I just buy straight 30wt non detergent.

The 2 stroke oil your buying right now was produced with oil bought when the price was very high. Expect to see outboard motor oil come back down once last years stock is exhausted from the warehouses.

Your right about the price of oil. Most likey go to a 4 stroke when this old oil gussler bits the dust. I have 3 friends now running Yamaha F225. Two of the threes guys have over 2000 hours on them and have had no problems at all. The third has 1436 hours on his when I fish with him last week. The valves where checked on all 3 motors at roughly 1000 hours. None of them required any adjustment.

i guess the 2 stroke is more user friendly.

Four stroke - Fill gas, turn key, leave dock, enjoy the fresh air as you motor about.

Two stroke - Fill gas, add expensive 2 stroke oil, turn key, won't start, pump primer bulb again, finally starts, cloud of blue smoke overwhelms the area, smoke clears bugs and fellow dock users from the scene, leave dock, inhale blue smoke, feel noxious all day

Yep, two strokes are much more user friendly :D:D

I thought about that before I posted Walmart's current price. Store's especially discounters like Walmart know if they had extra oil in stock and prices came down they would have to discount it from last years prices or they would look like the "high" price provider, not the low.

Walmart has an amazing business model, more of a point of sale system that holds the vendors hostage to give them the cheapest prices. they don't keep much in the back. Everything they have is on the shelves.

So I doubt that Walmart had any Oil left in stock from last year. End of season they price the stuff down to move. Case in point, I bought 4 tubes of 3M 4200 on sale there near end of season for $4 a tube. Marina charges $12.99.

I still say it's price fixing by the O/B industry to move people towards 4 strokes. Sure, many manufacturers still produce 2 strokes, but in my opinion (other than Etec and DFI models) I don't think they want to risk ticking off the 2 strokers who someday will probably have to change over to 4 strokes or Etec and DFI models.

Reminds me of picture film, where many companies held off from changing over to digital camera models. A few companies still produce film cameras but I'm sure the price of film and developing will go to the moon forcing them over to digital because of the price.

I'm in the market for a used 2006 0r 2007 2nd rig which I'm sure will come with the Merc 150 Opti DFI (that's the way this model was sold most of the time) I'll use it for a season and I'm sure I'll enjoy this 2 stroker, but I'll be swapping it out for the Merc 200 Verado 4 stroke as soon as I come up with the needed extra dollars for the change over.

As you say, 2 stroke outboard might come down. But I doubt it. I think you are more likely to see oil prices rise as they usually do towards the summer driving season (simple supply and demand). Exxon made 45 bil in 2008. We paid $5 a gal at the marinas last year. People are suckers to the oil companies. They keep us on their heroin because they know we are all oil junkies. Case in point sales of hybrid cars are down 60% this year over last. Be prepared to watch oil shoot up again (especially as economies heat up again). Think you will be paying $2 for regular for much longer? Think again

Sadly, we really do deserve higher oil prices because we all reap what we sow, is it really neccessary for like 1/2 the cars on the road to be SUV's?

Unless of course we are towing a boat :)

End of oil rant :D

Re: Looks like I'm done using Merc 2-stroke oil

As the volume of 2-S oil being made goes down the real cost to produce each gallon goes up, and many companies bought raw materials when prices where high and they need to work through that stock. I wouldn't expect the price of it to go down and I doubt there is any price fixing to make everyone convert to a 4-S, although I wouldn't put it past the feds to tax 2-S oil to help create less demand for it.

Push comes to shove, it's back to 30W non-detergent for me. I wonder how much that costs now, or if it's available???

My 37 year old 2-stroke:

Pay substantially less to acquire than a single year of annual maintenance for most "modern" outboards.

Spend substantially less than a couple of years worth of annual maintenance costs for most "modern" outboards, to rebuild all major systems in motor.

Run without further problems or substantial expense for years afterwards.

Change spark plugs once in awhile, change gear oil as needed, replace water pump impeller every three to four years.

Spend less on fuel and moderately priced semi-synthetic 2-stroke oil, than the payments on most modern outboards of comparible size.

Tow lots of guys with $20,000 motors that have "crapped out" computer chips, with 37 year old outboard that runs like a dream day in and day out.

:D alot, because "baby needs shoes" doesn't keep me out of the boat - I can do both!

I ran my boat for the first time of the season this Sunday. As I backed down the ramp a guy with a shiny new OptiMax was backing down the other lane. He flicked his key, the engine started instantly, settled to a smooth idle and he drove away.

I choked mine, turned the key, it started quickly with a small puff of smoke. I ran it at high idle for a second and then shifted it into gear and it died. Started it again, let it warm up for a second more and then boated for the rest of the day with out a hiccup or stumble of any kind.

Having a shiny new state of the art outboard - $20K

Having a long paid for, reliable outboard that does everything I ask of it - priceless...
