Lorance 4800 or Eagle 480 Chartplotter

Anyone using one of these cheaper chartplotters, for inland waters?<br /><br />How do you like it?<br />Problems?<br /><br />What mapping chip do you use?<br />Do you also use any pc mapping software? which one?<br /><br />Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hey Roscoe, I haven't used either, but I did do some reasearch before I bought a navman. Both are made by the same company, the lowrance is the higher end model and is nema compatible. It uses navionics cards, along with some others, and map create for a pc.Personaly I would only buy a model that is nema compatible, within a few years you will only able to a dcs vhf radio, and will need to be able to hook it to your gps for it to work properly.<br /><br /> Jim

OK, got the NMEA 0183 thing, feeding into the dcs radio, all figured out.<br /><br />Doubt I will ever have such a radio, but good to know.<br /><br />I just bought the Eagle 500c.<br />It is basically a 480, but color, and nmea compliant.<br />Found it at a great price.<br /><br />Anyone want to buy my handheld gps?
