Lost a good one today.
Known Scott for quite a few years, our sons have gone to school and Scouts together since pre-K. He had surgery for lung cancer about 5 years ago, then chemo, then later brain surgery (cancer), more chemo, then a short break, then busted his back (weakened bones), then more lung surgery and chemo. He just flat gave out today.
Through all of this he was a remarkable man. Here's a little story:
We're out camping last spring in scouts, and Scott has this tent that has really seen better days. We get it all set up, and that night comes a really hard rain. Their tent was full of water, everything was soaked, and they all spent the night in their truck. We were kind of moaning about the mud and stuff in the morning after, and Scott, with everything soaked, having slept or not slept in the truck all night with the wife and two kids, has the biggest smile on his face looking around at the campsite with all of the kids and families around having time together, says this will be a great and wonderful day with our families, what's a little rain? And it was a beautiful day to be alive.
RIP Scotty. See you on the flip side.

God was taking care of Scott all along, and now Scott gone on to a place without pain and tubes and chemicals and that's a blessing. Every day he woke up was a blessing for Scott and he was happy for that time he had with his wife and kids.
If I have a purpose in all of this, it's to keep his son involved in Scouts to give him some continuity through all of this. Others have been making sure that he is still getting to the sports he's in. Even though this has been a long ordeal for their family (this is not sudden or unexpected), it is still very, very difficult to lose your dad when you're 10 years old.

My deepest sympathies to all whose lives he touched along the way.

We've seemed to have lost a lot of friends in the past year. Some in their early 40's. You just never know one day to the next what the plan for you is. As bad as life sux sometimes, be thankful to be alive, you could be one of the unlucky ones.

I'm absolutely convinced that the meaning of life is relationships. (Mat 22:37-40) It sounds like Scott had figured that out. Well done, Scott.

He was a bit beyond that. More like "The glass is full of cool spring water when it's really 1/4 full of warm city water". It sucks to have watched him and his family go through this over the last 4 years. Bad things really do happen to good people sometimes. I'm not certain at all that I would have the will (strength? courage? faith?) to have gone through all that he did and smile through it all. Friggin' amazing.
