Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Well I used #1200 and lightly sanded the whole boat. Nice relaxing work. Did I mention the wife and kid went shopping. Haha, yea I got to spend about 45 minutes by myself, my bro came over so even better. So far so good. Did NOT get to put another coat on. I have to wait until Friday for that. Minor runs, the paint likes to pool on the under side of rivets the ooze a tad before drying. Note to self, less paint on the roller next coat.

Schedule;
Friday coat #3
Saturday AM wet sand #1500 grit
Saturday later AM, coat #4
Saturday early PM, pick up interior color at Ace
Saturday late PM, wet sand with #2000 grit
Sunday coat #5 (final coat)

I can put a coat of paint on on 1/2 hour
I can wet sand a coat in 1/2 hour

Not as much work as it seems. It's kind of rewarding work too. Each coat covers more and gets prettier. I get a little better at applying the paint with each coat too.

Now it's good night. Zach says he's too tired to say anything to you guys.

maybe try following up with a dry foam brush....just use the corner to carefully soak up any runs that are trying to begin?

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

I used a quality foam roller, not the HF rollers. What a difference, coat #3 looks pretty sweet. I'm going to put another coat on right now. Then 2000 grit wetsand. We'll see then how she looks then.

Zach painted the transom and one of the sides of the boat. I went back over it cause, well he's 8. At least he can say he helped. He was having a great time until he stubbed his bare toe on the cement. Tore the end of it off, blood everywhere. He fell on the cement in shorts an hour before. I fixed the skinned knee and patched his toe up. He might live.

Pics in a bit. I hope everyone's project is doing ok.

We went to Ace hardware. The have their own brand of Rusto, Rust Stop I think. They will tint it any color you want. Oil based enamel too. So Barato wasn't lying, it's totally true!:p

Zach picked out yellow for his boat. I'm like too late dude. We did find a pleasant blue/green tint for the inside. I picked six different shades and Zach finalized it.

Good luck guys. We are getting close. I can't wait for the motor, I hate paint and love mechanical work.

lookin great Don! even if you listened to that lying NM rattlesnake. woulda thought you knew the trouble listening to talking snakes can get you in.... ;)

Tell Zach that blood in the resto REALLY makes it your own. it's funny, my mom used to tell me not to cry when i did stuff like that cuz it let me check that my blood was a good healthy color and not lookin anemic or anything. now she's surprised when i have such a cavalier attitude towards injuring myself.......

When I repaint, I might have to try those rollers. I know I have to fix where the gas got the paint. I think I'd rather paint than mechanic, and BD your paint job looks excellent. Maybe it was Zac's help. And Borato, I always get in trouble when I say the kids will heal, it's the other things That have to be fixed.

Heyyou--

while we're on that topic (sorry Don), any suggestions on how to avoid that happening? maybe an alum trim plate around the vent outlet? you have me thinking it might be a good idea to invest in one of those filler whistles.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Wasn't overfilled til it sat in the sun for a few hours. I was trying to get my camper ready to go. I've been wondering that myself. Thinking maybe starcrafter might have something. My vent holes are a good foot above the tank, and maybe 3 inches below the fill spout. Didn't overfill, or turn the fuel off, but 20 gal in each tank was all I could afford. Must have been too much anyway. It was setting with the back low, and the tanks are right next to the transom, so are the vent tubes. That might have had something to do with it. If you think of something let me know. The trim plate would have to go all the way down, and still could run to the keel. That's where it did the most damage.

Re: Lost a fiberglass boat got another tinnie

Well I don't know why I bother to make any schedules it neve r works out for me. That being said the gluvit went on pretty nice. I tilted the boat up on it's side so the stuff would pool and run into the side seam. 20% of a can did half the boat easy. I weighed it out rather than measure it. Weighing is more accurate. I had a small electronic scale in with the pinewood derby stuff so I dug it out. Worked great!

I bought the paint for the inside at Ace. Got it home and I noticed it was gloss. I really wanted flat for the inside. Back to Ace the next day, they can't tint flat. Whaat?? Now what? I'm afraid gloss will blind us on the inside of the boat. I'm putting some sand in the paint, will this dull it out? Dunno, what to do now.

I keep brushing the Gluvit runs back into their proper place. Doesn't look too bad. Maybe second side tonight. Then lay boat flat and touch up any thin areas. I'll probably use 50% of a quart on this 12' boat.

I need to solve this paint dilemma. Let me check around on line. Shame too, the Ace paint in called Peace River and is a pretty blue/green. Not a perfect color match but kinda close. Google is my friend, evil spying friend.

Don---try an auto paint store. they have flattening agent to mix in with paint to get the exact degree of gloss you're seeking, and may have some that will work with enamel. failing that, maybe scuff it with wet 400 after it's done?

Well I emailed Ace Hardware. They gave me the phone number to the paint factory. According to them you can't tint the flat as there is no tint base in flat.

I'm going to try Sherwin Williams paint store on the way home. Auto paint if SW doesn't come through.

Zach alert;

Don - He hasn't even reached his teen years and he's raising Cain. I don't want to be in your shoes in a few years. LOL And even though Zach is gonna kick your butt someday, congrats on earning his green belt.

On the Sea Scamp front, I hope you find the paint. Don't these paint companies know about the Mob? :D :

Congrats to Zach on the green belt , selecting mellow Yellow for the exterior & making Peace River a destination & possibly a theme, not just an interior color...

Zach will definitely need an official Mob baseball cap for the official splash;)

Zach has no choice in this. I sign up for a year at a time. I pay he goes, no discussion. He has tried to quite, he didn't participate for about a month. We moved him from intermediate class back to beginner classes (white and gold). He went to class though, whether he would go out on the matt or not, he went to class. Dad lectured the boy on not quitting all the way home. He'll thank me one day, probably not today. He's got belt presentation at 10:00 am this morning. Over a hundred yelling screaming parents and Grandparents and kids will be in the Dojo (Karate people are loud!). The first time he cried, for the second belt he free formed it across the matt, kicks, punches etc.

Working on boats has given me a break form the whole Autism thing. Me and Zach just trying to figure out how to fix up our Starcrafts. Great therapy here. You guys with the whole boat thing have been awesome. Zach is starting to acquire some skills because of it too.

Any Dad's out there who are thinking of trying to connect with your kids. Start a little family bonding project, get a Starcraft. Go out and get one of these little tin boats and go to town. Then go fishing and boating and tubing. When you finish one get another, or a bigger one. Have a little fun, make a few friends and you just may end up with a cool old boat. When someone stops you at the dock and says man that's a neat old boat there..........priceless.
