Re: Lots and lots of advice required, please

ask the dealer about the 280 drive on it....

thats why i thought it was a gas motor. (sorry for the confusion jolin)

however.....the 43 antique wooden yacht i lived on for a year sold in canada for 75,000.

so any way you cut it....that could be a great deal.

JoLin . .

Actully more people are killed by hippos than crocs but hippos tend to keep away from the harbours.

V-P dealer is based in Kariba where the boat is si I can get him to look at the mechanics. Have also asked him if he knows anyone capabe of surveying the hull.

There are several marinas but I aint too sure how they get the larger boats in and out. I have seen 30 foot steel hulls at one marina stored on trailers in what can only be called a parking lot. There is also a HUGE floating dry dock that can get 80ft pontoon type houseboats out of the water but I dread to think of the cost of that!! I will ask the V-P dealer about, Kariba ia a small place and as he in the trade so to speak he should be able to point me in the right direction.

Carl

Hi, Carl- a short haul (pull the boat out of the water, do what you have to do and put it back in) isn't very expensive here in the states. Maybe $400 for a boat the size of yours (little guesswork here). I'd at least ask. Your mechanic would want to do it in order to inspect the drive, anyway.

I hope this works out for you. Cool boat :)

Cheers JoLin but the boat isn't mine (yet!).

Mischief Manage: Why is the AQAD40M with the 280 odd and is galvanic corrosion extra worrying because of it.

Re: Lots and lots of advice required, please - Update

OK So I have now paid my first visit to the boat along with the mechanic of the local Volvo dealer.

Good points worth mentioning are that I am told the hull is well made and it is dry as a bone inside. The inside is very nice and despite being sat for six months since it was last used had no noticeable odour. The overall layout is quite spacious with the upper deck being particularly large.

Toilet and shower are in decent condition but would benefit from a refit.

Bad points are it is in need of a complete paint job above the gunwhale (do not know about below the waterline yet) and the entire front windscreens have been removed and replaced with badly fitted perspex - small amount of wood rot inside as a consequence. Water, diesel and waste tanks look in good condition.

The man from Volvo suggested the best thing for the engine would be to move it forward, fit a gearbox and replace the outdrive with a prop so I am trying to get a price for this to be done.

The layout of the boat is:
Open are aft with engine access with sink and stove against fwd bulkhead. In through centre door with bench seats on either side that convert to beds and removeable table, under deck is a large area that could easily be converted to a storage area. At front of this cabin is helm on port and 240V fridge/freezer on starboard. Forward down a step - toilet on port and shower stbd. Through another door to cabin with either two singles or a double bed.

More information off the owner is that the hull was cleaned and painted four years ago and it was last out of the water three years ago when the outdrive was fixed and a rudder fitted. He has owned the boat since 2001 and is selling it because his crew (wife) has mutinied.

Obviously the windscreen needs replacing and as I want to convert the boat to charter out I would also need to make the following changes.
To seperate crew from guests - fit roof access hatch to the fwd cabin and panel off from rear of helm forward.
Fit a new toilet and shower for guests use on the rear open deck.
Also replace existing fridge with a LPG powered one.

I am now making plans for a return visit to take measurements to see if my plan is feasible and enable me to put together costings to see if it is financially viable. The local floating dry dock charge US$250 per day but I am told it will be cheaper to haul it up a slipway. Local labour (for paint stripping etc will cost US$5 per day).

Can anyone offer any advice regarding replacing the outdrive, I trust the people I get to do it will sort out all the controls, cables, wires, water and exhaust. I will have to look into engine access once I know how far forward it will have to be moved.

Thanks
Carl

Re: Lots and lots of advice required, please

What's the reasoning behind the recommendation to change it from an I/O to an inboard? That's a pretty major refit in my mind, with a fair amount of engineering work that must be done to figure out placement, angles, closing up the transom, etc.

Re: Lots and lots of advice required, please

OK, here we go.

Having owned a 17ft 115HP fishing boat and a 10ft inflatable I am thinking of getting myself something a little more relaxing and have my eye on the following little number moored on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe (which is about 225 miles from me):

General.
Steel mono hull, 42ft long, 4ft draft. Volvo Penta 165 HP plus turbo (AQAD40?) 3440 hrs ? major overhaul at 3130 ? Volvo 280 fixed external leg. Full instrumentation. Max PAX 6

Lower Deck.
Front cabin - double bed.
Lounge ? double bed. Washroom with hot/cold hand shower and toilet.
Rear outside - 4 Plate gas stove/oven, wash basin, hot/cold shower

Top Deck.
Clear area with awnings and large cooler box.

As well as the boat being moored so far away the owner also lives a fair way and the only quick communication is by sms, so when I go to see him/and the boat I need to make sure I ask/look at all I need to, this is where I need all your help.

As this size and type of boat is well outside my experience/expertise can you all please tell me what questions I should be asking and what I should be looking for? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Questions I already have lined up are:
Age of boat
Age of engine
Engine model number (for further research)
Any repair receipts available
Fuel tanks size
Water tank size
What batteries are included and age
Any bedding included
Any pots, pans, tableware and crockery etc

I will update this posting regularly to list all the questions in one post and when complete it should be a useful checklist for anyone else considering buying a similar vessel.

Thanks all.

Take itfor a ride. Doesn't sound like enough motor for that size boat.

Re: Lots and lots of advice required, please

The recommendation to change to inboard was to reduce maintenance and possible repair costs. Don't know if it has any bearing on the advice but the uppermost bellows on the outdrive sit six inches or more below the waterline. There are literally thousands of submerged trees in Kariba and the water level can varies by up to 20 feet would it be cheaper to ding a prop on a shaft than a prop on an outdrive?
Obviously I will have to get someone competent to do the work and look into costings but as local wages are 1 to 2 hundred a month at least labour wil be cheap.
