low speed needle bearing

I still can't figure out why the motor will not idle. It runs fantastic at medium and highest speed. I took the carb off again and checked out the one piece the carb rebuild kit said I could leave in when cleaning. When I checked for the part, the idle needle bushing (bearing), there does not appear to be one still in there.

My motor is a 79 9.9 Johnson. The 1979 service manual shows that there is supposed to be one in the diagram, however the 1979 parts manual does not have one in the diagram???? I am having a very hard time getting the new one to go in. Does this mean this motor doesn't need one? It will not go past the threads where the slow speed needle goes in.

Tasha I don't believe you understand what I am asking. From what I understand it is supposed to go in past the threads on the carburetor near where the needle seats right? Otherwise the needle would sit way out and would not be threaded in. My question is how do I get the bushing to go past the threads so I can then thread the needle into the carburetor? I guess the first thing is does this particular engine need one? The service manual diagram has one, the parts manual does not have one in the diagram. Every other part is in both.

Tasha, isn't the part you are referring to the idle needle retainer? I am referring to the needle bearing or bushing(the carb kit and service manuals used different names for it).

Re: low speed needle bearing

Tasha, the bushing/bearing is in the service manual, it is not in the parts manual. The manuals I have are the original Johnson 79 9.9/15 hp manuals. Do you have experience with putting these in? If not, does anyone else know if/how I should be putting this bushing in?

I also wonder if the slow speed needle itself is the problem. Should the end be extremely pointed? The end of mine looks like someone chopped off a thumbtack about 1/64" from the end of the point.
