Ayuh,... When ya had the drive off, was there any Slop in the little vertical shaft/ bellcrank in the bellhousin',..??

It sounds like yer loosin' travel, to Slop somewhere,...

Pull the drive back off, 'n Look 'round,...

If ya installed, 'n adjusted it by the Merc manual, something Else is wrong,...

Thanx Bondo. I forgot to mention I also replaced the shift lever. The old one had a bend in it, the new one was straight. I assumed they changed it, right?

By 'shift lever' I assume you mean the lever on the shift plate (where the lower shift cable and the remote control shift cable 'meet').

What was the part number of the new one?

Chris........
(I also added a few full stops and commas to your post. Makes it a little easier to read. Might be why I ignored your original post too.:D)

The shift lever that fits into the slide on bottom end of the cable

The only thing I can find is the shift cam which isn't flat. It is item 33
