Lower shift cable problem

I've adjusted both cables numerous times, and I just can't seem to get it right. My problem is that when I try to shift the drive either forward or in reverse, the gears crash for a second, then engage, easier forward then in reverse. The shift cutout switch barely engages either way. When shifting, I can hear clicking like the gears are trying to engage, then they actually engage. I know this isn't healthy for the gears. I've followed how to adjust the cables to a T. It seems as if the lower cable isn't creating enough tension to activate the cutoff switch so the gears can properly engage. Does this sound like a stretched lower shift cable to you guys? If not, what do you suggest? The engine is a 1985 Mercruiser 140hp, 3.0.

Re: Lower shift cable problem

The interrupt switch will not trip on the muffs... Not enough load on the prop shaft... And it should NEVER engage when shifting IN to gear...

Have a look at this video and see if it helps -> http://youtu.be/-s_tgevX2aI

achris, that's the exact video I watched on how to adjust my cables. I adjusted it the same way you adjusted yours. Near the same measurements. The only difference is that I didn't have my prop chocked and Didn't have anyone to help me when I was trying to adjust it. But your video is the one that shed light as the manual I had might as well been written in German.

I will wait until I put it in water until and see from there. When I do put it in water, it will shift correctly without the popping and clicking of the gears right?
