Wal-mart has Super-tec lower unit lube works just fine in your motor. https://www.walmart.com/search/?quer...%20gear%20lube
That article is a bunch of BS. Any 2 strk motor uses a total loss oil system. That means the oil goes through the motor and is not recirculated. So where do these molecules stay. Your engine does not know the difference between synthetic and regular oil. The only thing that article proves is any idiot can write a blog. I have mixed synthetics with conventional oil and never had a problem.

The only difference I found running Pennzoil Premium TC-W3 Semi-syn. is that it smokes less in the same engine before I used PZ. Mercury won't tell you what's in it's oil sitting next to the PZ oil at twice the price.

I have picked upon some of the big guns talking on here and they mention that in areas like S. Florida (ones home) using a blend works better for engines sitting up as the dyno oil does a better job of preventing corrosion when sitting up.....his words, not mine and he did have some big toys and lots of knowledge/experience.

My WW carries Merc/Qs Premium High Performance Gear Oil, only one they carry, and it's marked 90w. I'd use it in anything....that I have/had.

If a gearcase is properly sealed you do not have to change oil very often.----For most users once every 5 years is OK.-----Use the best oil your boat shop has on the shelf.------The best oil is still cheap compared to gears / bearings / shafts !!!

What EXACTLY makes it better?

PS Not changing the gearlube for 5 yrs another one of the Stupidest things I have ever heard.
What if you get fishing line in the seal?

And that is the point, you want people to spend more money but can't tell them why. You tell people bearings and gears are expensive and then say don't change oil for 5 yrs. No owners manual or service manual tells people to do that.

I agree with Racerone on the point of interval on the oil changes mostly because if the LU is sealed properly the viscosity is not broken down. especially not in southern Ontario where your boating-season is 6 months.

having said that; it does NOT mean in every situation or location i.e. Caribbean rentals that work 24/7 365 a year!!

I'm NOT saying that cheaper oil(s) are NOT equally as good, but for the amount in question; why not!?!?

Of course you agree with racers bad advice. And then add your own horrible example on top of it! Ontario is cold if you don't change the lower unit fluid how will you know if water is in it? What if during that 5 yrs nobody checks it and it is no longer sealed? A lot of lower units have been cracked over the winter because of that bad advice. Or it leaks and there is no longer gear lube in it?
With that I am out. Because now it has just become a matter of people not letting the facts get in their way!

closing argument;

I failed to mention; periodically inspection of gear-oil & level is necessary!
(I guess raceone & I thought that is common knowledge)

What service manual is that 5 yr lube in? Ask your buddy Racer if he tells his customers to not change the lube in 5 yrs. And if he will warranty that?
