Yep, I made my first "pickle fork" over 50 years ago. And if you want really get fancy, mount it to your workbench and free up the vise.

Mount it to the workbench?. Ha!, That's where it was first time. Dropped something, liked to knock my brains out raising up, hence it became portable.

Yeah I ran steel channel coming from underneath my work bench, then mounted my pickle fork to that. Now I can beat on a gearcase without having to worry about it falling out of the vice!

Joe, I mount mine to my bench and remove it when I'm done. That's why they make nuts and bolts. LOL.

Being retired, I don't use it any more... but I did prefer the vice.

Sorry for laughing, but I guess we all have done that a few times. Me, my problem is working in flip-flops and dropping stuff on my toe. Doc says don't do that. Hey, how about mounting the pickle fork to the bench with a hinge so it will pivot up. Nah, forget it.

Now there's a chance for someone to make a fortune... steel toe covers for the working man's flip flops.

As Janice on "Friends" would say.... Oh... My... God!

Do you have any pictures of it in action?

New to outboards just getting my little workshop area set up

No pictures. Trust me... I used it for many years on all of the various horsepower lower units thru the years. You just need a good vice to support it. It's designed so that the cavitation plate sits atop the fixture.

This is a Black & Decker workmate that I have altered with wider jaws. It works good for my needs. Pay no attention to the color of the lower unit.

Seeing Oldcatamounts's photo made the penny drop on how the lower unit would sit.

Hey F-R, I used to work in flip flops too. Dropped a (running) 4" grinder on my foot. Laid it open pretty good and severed some nerves. Can't feel the top of my foot and my first three toes. Doc laughed at me. Now I at least wear leather sneakers.

Using your idea I found this item on a old Gym set, works well with my little 9.9 lower leg.

I will cut it down and when I mount my new vice it should be a Little more stable.
