I'm pulling the lower unit on a 1977 115 Johnson. Took 2 bolts out from each side, and 2 from the bottom(1 under the zinc anode). The lower unit came down about 2 inches or so, and stopped. Won't come down any further, even with some nudging. DO I need to remove something from the shifter or am I missing something somewhere? Thanks.

You must disengage the shift linkage. Located under the carbs usually. Put it back up and disconnect. Then drop the lower unit again.

Are we just talking about the control arm that goes down into the exhaust housing? It's behind the choke solenoid, which means that it'll require a little bit of work to get in there, but I just want to make sure that I can get the right thing the first time. Now I'm having trouble getting the lower unit back up, of course. Don't have a helper yet to spin the flywheel while I lift. It isn't like a little 25 hp.

not for one this size. And it doesn't seem like I'm likely to go spend 30+ dollars on a manual to change a 30 dollar impeller. If I were trying to troubleshoot the ignition system, I could see it. I'm really not wanting to sound rude here, but there used to be a time when this was a good place to come and people tried to help people, based on their own experiences. My question was pretty simple to have you jump me about a manual on such a simple question.

The "do you have a manual" thing was so that if you did and I knew which one you had I could maybe reference something in it if needed. If you have trouble responding to questions asked when you come for help then you should include something like "Just give me the answer and don't ask me anything" in your original post. See what response you get then !!!

Below the carbs is a linkage that can be accessed usually with a 1/4" swivel, long or series of short 1/4" extensions and the relavent 1/4" drive socket. From what I know it is accessed from the starboard side and sometimes has a screwdriver slot in it as well. Some folk take the carb's off to do this but personally I do not. Wrap some teflon tape around the bolt head to keep it on the socket when replacing it.

By the way did you see the search function ???
You may find that useful as well in case you don't fancy answering anyone else's simple questions.
Hope all goes well for you.

This year motor has the bellcrank linkage. Under the carbs you'll see a pair of lever arms that pivot on a bolt. One side is connected to the shifter rod, the other side to your shifter arm/cable linkage. Loosen the bellcrank bolt until you can split the pair of shifter arms on the rod side apart enough to get it out. You'll probably want to put a couple of bolts back into the LU while you do this.

You're starting a war you needn't start. Your question came across wrong, if that's what you meant. I'm always appreciative of the help and I always use the search function before I ask questions and if I have a manual, I always try and consult it before I ask questions. If I just asked every question that ever came to mind, I'd probably have enough posts to be a vice admiral or something.
As always, I appreciate the help.

I don't think I fired the first bullet. I will leave it at that and respond no more.
