( ordered from a place that requests the model # before they will ship). the prop shaft seal and all o-rings fit properly.

Tim,

That seal SHOULD have a 0.875 OD and a 0.313 width. The shaft size is 0.425

That seal kit should have the 327031 seal (Sierra 18-2035) which will have the dimension I gave above. That kit number is right for you.

By the way, before sealing up the gearcase, measure the shock absorber. It should be 6 3/4" long. Any more and she is broken.

Was it wrong? Different from the dimensions I posted?

Yes the part number I gave of 327031 is just a superseeded number from the original 300599. If you type in the original part number on marine engine.com it will give you the superseeded numbers, just as a tip.

I have no idea what could be going on there. That 300599 seal was used on the CD and AD for a number of years. How tight are we talking? Were you able to measure the seal and the cavity? Even with a tape measure? Seal should be 7/8"

EDIT

the original seal measures at 7/8, but the omc seal # 327031 measures at 13/16....same as the seal from the sierra kit??

edit: just put my reading glasses on, and the omc seal has 300599 embossed on the rubber?? the part number on the pkg is 327031.

NW,

Does this look familliar?;
IMG_0436.jpg

(notice the gap in between the housing and the shell of the seal)

Is there a chance that the bearing housing you have may be the newer style OMC 382796? (looks like it)

This is what I ran into over the summer when I did the referb on my Fleetwin. The old bearing housing (376074) and new one are interchangeable, but the shaft seals aren't!

Post number 58 explains what I ran into;
http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/1956-evinrude-fleetwin-freshen-up-552803-3.html

If it's the newer style housing, the seal you need is either OMC 314167, OR.. Sierra 18-2024. ;)

Good call RJB.

I have actually never run across a new style housing.

Tim, I hope the seals are returnable! I likely have the seal you need.

The seal mentioned above will have a 0.937 OD

thanks RJ, i may have to try the part # that worked for you. the seal i removed is mangled, but does measure out as hightrim says...7/8, and both the sierra part and the omc part measure at 13/16?? :confused:

The noticeable difference I saw right off the bat was the design of the seal (before I realized I had two different diameters). The new seal that I had pulled out of that newer housing had more of the metal shell surrounding the top of the seal. The old style seal for the older housing (like the one in the pic I posted) had allot more rubber exposed on the top.

This is what the new style seal looks like in the new style housing, notice more metal;

If you take a look at my old thread I linked here, there is a picture on post 58 where I put the old style, and new style seals end to end to show the difference in the outside diameter. The replacement seal I bought from a dealer still had extra metal around the top compared to the older style seal I tried to install.

Good luck! :)

What is the part number of your housing? Have you measured it? Is it worn on the underside from a faulty shock absorber?

cant find a part# on the housing Chris, but i did get a caliper today, and the old seal does measure 0.937, so i guess its the same issue that RJB ran into. will have to order 314167.

Well at least you figured it out. I have never encountered that myself.

I do know those housings are getting harder to find. Alot got damaged by faulty shock absorbers.

Re: lu seal kit, johnson cd 13

that must be what happened to this one at some point in time. lesson learned tho!! and thanks RJB, id still be scratching my head if you didnt pass along your similiar experience.

can you still get the separate parts for a lu rebuild?.....(would it be cost effective to buy the parts separately?) or are they only available in kit form? still have a couple more to do, and would like to use the 327031 seals i have.

Re: lu seal kit, johnson cd 13

You can get them separately from the dealer, if he is willing to order them in. You may be able to order them seperately from NAPA as well with the Sierra seals.

Or PM me with what you need when you get a list together. I carry them all.
