I love Islanders and I will be following this thread. And thanks for posting the nice big pics instead of the usual dinky thumbnails.
What are you going to repower it with? 4.3?
Is there a donor in waiting?

No donor yet, The game plan is to keep the motor(s) out side the boat, Bracket and outboard

Update on tonight's progress,
Cleaned up the exterior of the transom, stainless wire wheel on a 6" metabo grinder and 6" da sander with 36 grit. 45 minutes work and it is spotless!! Time to start on covering up the swiss cheese. 1 Sheet of aluminum got itself clamped 13/4" low of the top of transom so it will clear my rub rail and then I traced the outside edge. Off to the plasma cutter

Out line to be cut
100_0919.jpg

Straight edge to make the side cuts easier

Blazing away

Makes a dandy cut

Final shape

So the piece is set to be 1" short of the sides and 3/4" short of the bottom

Should be able to shed enough heat to not melt the factory sealer out of the seams if I choose to weld this in.
I think I am going to use the skin from ol 69 to plate the inside of the transom so when I bolt the bracket on the bolts will have metal to rest against, not just epoxied plywood!
Also SWMBO did a little paint prep

Bye Bye Stickers!

The plasma cutter does a heck of a job. Ended up with a nice chunk of tin. Yesterday when I wrote that blob I forgot you are going with a bracket. Are you going to put the wood in the transom too?

Ya there will be outer skin (doubled up now), wood, inner skin, and two 2"x2" sq. tube knee braces, super overkill strong!!!!!!!! (I hope)

Wow - That should hold the bracket. Are you fabbing the bracket or going manufactured? This is one big project.

I am bargain shopping looking for a bracket, If I do not find one I will fab it up!!! Really want a full length swim platform style, problem finding one is most are 30" set back and that is too deep based on the theory of 1" setback for every 1' of hull lenth

Check on eBay, there is a fella there who can build one just the size you want. He'll negotiate a little with you too;)

Well, last night was not I was not on my A game, made a little more work for myself than I planned. My transom is mostly welded in, struggled a little with old Aluminum to new, made for some ugly welds that I will have to spend some time cleaning up, such is life. In the long run it is a win based on the covering of about 125 holes and once it is painted it will fade from memory! Pics coming

Ok, here is the wire and welder

Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

Finished welding up my transom, and cleaned the welds up this morning, also dry fitted my transom wood.
Pic sucks weld looks acceptable
100_0956-Copy.jpg

Welded the Stringer hole in. added some warp but it will work
100_0954-Copy.jpg

Rear view, can see the outline of the weld
100_0955-Copy.jpg

Welded my lower transom angles that hold the wood, no rivets through transom
100_0964-Copy.jpg

100_0969-Copy.jpg

Transom fits well despite the warp

Moved on and prepared for Gluvit, washed it with 50/50 mix of vinegar after using a stainless 6" stringer bead wire wheel on a grinder to rough it up, then moved over to the hoist to tighten up some rivets. I could not get under the boat with it on my cart, here is a pic of my Half arsed cart I built, Function over Fashion
100_0971.jpg

up on the hoist,
100_0970-Copy.jpg

Used 2x4's to help it out
100_0975-Copy.jpg

Safety first
100_0973-Copy.jpg

Put jack stands at each end and put a Hilo under the end also, NOT FALLING ON ME!
I only had a few rivets showing "leak streaks", Logan and I got underneath on creepers and each took a side and circled in paint pen any suspect rivets, we then switched sides and looked each others side over, Redundancy ya know!
Thanks to DjPeters I had a air rivet hammer to rebuck rivets with, Logan got up in the boat with a sledge hammer and a smaller hammer, AKA bucking bars. I got back on the creeper and voila!
HORRIBLE PIC OPPORTUNITY
100_0980.jpg

Went well, loud and obnoxious but successful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! May have had one pull through a little, will see when I leak test after gluvit.

Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

Back on the cart it went, tomorrow before work we are going to get a coat of gluvit on!!!!!!!!!!!! We vacd it out (amazing what the air hammer released out of the ribs) and washed in vinegar again, rinsed out and vacd the water out!!

QUESTION, Can I put one layer of gluvit on in the morning and one the same night?????????? Say 10 hrs dry time???? Really no info on their site on recoating with gluvit, they just mention topcoating with paint. What you all think?? or know?????
Thanks Rick

Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

Great job on the transom Rick. I have only ever put on one coat of gluvit with no problems. It takes quite a while to even firm up so it wicks into everywhere. IMHO one coat is all you need.
