Majic Paint w/ Hardener Cure Time?

Finally going to paint my Starcraft. The bottom paint is in decent shape(solid, not flaking)....aside from a few bare spots. Going to use aluminum etch primer for the bare spots.

Bought Majic White paint and also gray primer. Since the existing paint is in decent shape...do I need to use primer? I lightly sanded the bottom of the boat and used 50/50 Vinegar solution.

If I do need to use primer...what is proper cure time before I can use the White paint(w/ catalyst hardener)?

After white paint is done...how long before I can splash the boat?

I read the "Woodonglass" write up btw. It didn't elaborate on cure times tho.

On a side note: I've read quite a few NEGATIVE reviews online about the Majic paint(including long cure times) Is it still a good paint or is there another paint that's now recommended over it?

lets ask him.....hey Woodonglass .... what is the cure time

majic or rustoleum or other paint all requires the hardener to even consider it. without the hardener, it takes a long time.

I have heard once about the primer having problems .. May have just been an old can idk ..
I would prime it then let it cure over night then shoot the white with hardener . Should be able to re-coat in about 4 hours or so ... I would give it at least a few days before splash ...

Ya...I've read some bad reviews of the primer also. That's what's got me spooked. Though I read something about Majic changing owners and the formulation being changed...and not being as good as it was. Not sure if there's any truth to it tho.

I'm not going to be spraying...I'm going to use the roll and tip method.

I tried using Majic paint/prime on a utility trailer. I don't know what happened... perhaps I sprayed-on to thickly, perhaps it got too cold overnight, but the gloss black finish that it should have been, turned-out being flat, and it never hardened properly. I'm personallynot a fan of Majic!

I had really good results adding Majic hardener to RUSTOLEUM // never used majic paint to compare

CURE time will vary with temperature

I'm pretty curious about the quality of Majic as well as I'm prepping my boat for paint, I'm going to do some test sprays this weekend to see how it works out. I am interested in that Rustoleum paint as well - wellcraft-classic210 what Rustoleum product did you use? After reading some varying reviews on Majic quality I want to spray out some Rustoleum as well see what I like more.

It was a gallon or Rustoleum Professional -- Available from my local building supply at $25-30

This may be old news -- but if its not over 50 Degrees F the paint may never cure correctly. Unpleasant law of chemistry for those of us in northern climates.

think thin coats when painting it , give it 8 hrs in between or you might wind up with first coat uncured and wrinkling second coat. personally after using two part urethane paints i would never go back to oil based but then i prefer to spray not roll and tip. and Wood and others have produced some excellent results so i guess its personal choice.

Majic Paint is OK, their Primer is NOT!!! I use Rustoleum Clean Metal Primer and either Majic or Rustoleum paint. The primer works well on metal or fiberglass. No worries. ANY acrylic enamel paint hardener will work with either brand of paint. Re-coat time is about 2-4 hours depending on temps. 80+ 2 hours. 70-80 4 hours.

Put primer down and 1 coat of Majic w/ hardener. When can I put down a second coat?

Primer dried nicely in a few hours...so putting down a second coat was easy. But the actual white Paint was pretty sticky a few hours afterward...so I didn't re-coat.
I wont be able to put another coat on until tomorrow...is that too late? Am I going to have to wait a few days before putting down the final coat?

wipe down then shoot next coat .

Hmm, if you used the hardener the paint should be dry to the touch after a couple of hours. Did you use the hardener and did you let it "Cook" for 30 minutes with occasional stirring??

I just got done painting my Cherokee with Rustoleum professional enamel with Majic hardener and Majic thinner. I used all Rustoleum self etching primer, primer and paints. Results are great! Had no trouble with shooting, drying, or recoat. It is all about the prep work and attention to detail when painting, clean, clean, clean surfaces, thin coats, allow for proper dry times. I am about to start a thread on my boat.
