Re: making power on 4.3

I had the none vtec motor in the boat 4bbl 205 hp. the new motor has the 2bbl vortec marine manifold and merc carb. now if I was to buy a 4bbl vortec marine manifold would the QJET bolt up are what would need to be done. I am just upset that I spent all this money and have nothing to show im about ready to give up. I have had the boat to 5 different mercrusier dealers and none can figure out whats wrong.

Just a silly question, if you have this new vortec motor up, & running, where did you find a 2bbl vortec manifold for it? much less a 2bbl vortec marine manifold? Is this an aftermarket edelbrock 2 bbl manifold?, I know they make a vortec one that you can put a 2bbl on, or a TBI, from what I've learned over at the S-10 forum.

Next, did you check this picture to see if all is as shown here first?

My previous boat was a 1986'- 22' Celebrity Cuddy Super Sport, with twin 4.3V6 4bbl 205hp Cobra drives, so I know some early 4bbl versions were rated 205hp, and the 2bbl versions were rated 190hp, at the time, but of course that was not prop hp, but that part didn't matter much to me at the time ;)

Anyway, I wonder if the firing order could be different then the standard (1-6-5-4-3-2) on this brand new 4.3 V6 engine? Does anybody know?

If not, I still think there are a couple of plug wires crossed!

Re: making power on 4.3

In the vein of some of the questions above, I was playing with a friends boat and wound up getting an extra 5 mph out of it when we discovered that a piece of linkage was bent and the carb wasn't opening the secondaries nearly all the way... a lot of time the 'details" and checking all of them is very useful...

Re: making power on 4.3

I just want to throw this out there.. This size boat sounds like it would perform much better with a V8 engine and may be slightly underpowered with a V6 (you may want to consider this while you build another V6 engine for it)..

That being said, going from a 4 barrel to a 2 barrel may have been just enough loss in horsepower to make it show that the boat is underpowered.
You'd said it's a 23' boat that weighs 4500 pounds.. Seems heavy for a V6 (of course, I could be wrong).. I'd like to see other opinions on that.. But, as I said, if you are building another engine for it, why not go V8? I guess you'd have to change the outdrive gear ratio too.
