Sorry to hear you where sick. A lot of that going around.
The used the same tool from HF to drill the holes in the transom. Worked OK.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

I also picked up one of these at Harbor Freight for about 12 bucks. I thought it might come in handy for drilling the angled transom assembly holes when and if I ever get to the point of doing my transom assembly. The Mercruiser part is pricy, and I have seen a couple of folks build a wooden jig (frisco) to keep the hole true to the angle, but I thought this might work just as well and so I threw it in the cart???

Wise move, I'm headed over to the Islander thread to explain why:rolleyes:

Brutha Patrick!

Great actually talking/meeting with you today!!!!!!

If you are ever in Madison area, I'd love to take you out for a spin on local lakes. So many great views of the city from the lake...

Great score on those tools! Your're gonna need 'em... I need to stop by our local Harbor Freight ASAP! The list grows.....

Hope you get much done this weekend!

PM,

Glad to hear you are feeling better.

I used the lift to filp my boat and remove the motor. I also used the tool for drilling the holes. It worked well.

Bear:

Same here... Very cool actually talking live with folks that you meet on these boards.

Kent:
Thanks and I do recall you using that lift on your flip.

Well, I got a lot done last night. Transom piece is finally fitted but not firmly installed (again, video update soon)..

It's funny... I got out to the shop and showed the owner my new goodies... He gave me this confused look and said "why in the [heck] did you buy that lift; I have one sitting right over there in the other shed; and here is an engine stands you can use once you lift it; don't buy anything else, If I don't have it, you don't need it..." (other than merc specific tools, I think he is right).

So.... back she goes to Harbor freight and that puts another 200 bucks back in my pocket for resin or foam or electrical supplies or durabak, etc....

Aahhh, hello...Brownies for the Mob would be a great use of a newly freed up funds..... Maybe even spring for the WHOLE walnuts/pecans instead of the pcs:D

Make sure to check the lift cylinder under a heavy lifting load before you need the engine hoist. I can't remember, may have been frisco Jay w/ the leaky cylinder on engine lift day. Then he spent a long time getting a new replacement, repacking (??) it or cleaning metal filings out of it (or something like that) before he could even use the new 1. Not to mention spending 1/2+ cost of new lift just for the cylinder. At the end of the video clip, I think he made a disparaging comment about free trade & china/mexico:eek:......

But free use of a lift & stand is great! The $200 back in the boat fund is even better!! double:cool:!! If you spring for the walnuts, the mob won't tell the MRS about the $200 savings....... But the kids...hmmm... I might lean towards cutting them in on the savings....

Double ice cream cones for everybody that goes to the workshop & behaves while pops gets his resin/glass high on!!

Or even better: New Years respirators for the whole PMC clan:rolleyes:

On deck - I think I am going to pretty much copy Jay did with his Sea-Ray. Durabak with snap-in or just that stuff Jay used with the heavy back that just lays down like a floor mat.

JBC - I'm think any good 4 year old should know how to fiberglass... start em young... Does Harbor Freight sell miniature respirators and grinding suits??? They need to start earning their keep a little.

Also, this might be a question for the engine forum, but do any of you Merc guys know if you can get a "stylish" remote/control assembly.... The one from donor boat works, but it is sort of old/trashed/faded. I'd like to get something a little more stylish...vintage looking would be preferred, but something other than faded black/cracked plastic...

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Search evil-bay for motor controls, I really liked a vintage Mercury setup that went for $27+/- a day or 2 ago. Somewhere on iboats there's a thread showing a guy rehab his Johnson controls. (I promise to NEVER type or say that again EVER!?) Looked brand new when he put it back together.

The decal guy in NY: http://www.nymarine.ca/decals.html has authentic look decals if your control box is in ok shape & can get repainted.

Otherwise, depending on $$ (say that newly recovered $200) you can get some really nice looking modern setups. Shift lever trim & tilt etc. There are lots of options for side mount & dash mount, decide on where ya want them & how much & shouldn't take long to find a good looking setup.

So, 'glass & poly is like mother's milk & bourbon back home in Kentucky?? Get 'em used to it early & let 'em build up a tolerance, you know like lead. Give me a minute, I want to get child protective services # for your wife.....

Hey, if they get the tyvek suits slightly over-sized, they can all go as our new mod, oops, for halloween next year:D:eek::cool: The crown is optional, never too young to enjoy a coron... Nevermind.........

Got an order loaded into a cart @HarborFreight.com today when I got home. By the time I tried to confirm the order, their server is down for maintenance:mad: and my cart was empty. So maybe try again later.....

I also got a quote from US Composites today. Best price on everything but some 6" tape (6oz, 25yds) I found for about 1/2 from someone else. @$560 + $200+/-shipping. Freight to work...FiberglassServices.com is about $100 cheaper for just resin. All else will be from USComposites. Soon but not in January.....

Have a great weekend! Hope you got good weather for boat work & kid time! We're taking the remaining crew to the dog park.... Happy tails all around....

I think he used Durabak on his Glastron, and gel-coat on the SeaRay deck... I think I gonna try gel-coating the deck on my Imperial. But Durabak has crossed my mind... Good Stuff!

I snatched these up for a song. They came from a gigantic fly bridge glass boat that was being cut up (not by my hand)...

I sold one (I think I did anyway). The other I'll clean up all purdy and put some new knobs on. You looking for something about like that maybe?

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Check the cylinder for sure....my hoist was made in the USA, we could take out a CAT with it. When I went to use it the ram had crapped out....went a local tool place, all they had were Chinese rams......I would have paid the bucks for one made in the USA, but no luck. I ended up having to take the new pump apart and remove metal shavings from it to get it to work! Anyhow I hate everything Chinese.....I refuse to buy anything at HF.....China = Junk.

Looking forward to seeing your progress on the transom! At this rate you should be ready for splash about the time summer gets here!

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Hey guys:
I'm slogging my way through the transom install.... The transom was a bit of a curve ball (no pun intended) but we are getting through it.

I finally have the middle piece installed. I am posting two videos that show a bit of the process I went through and the second one ends with the middle transom piece installed and fitted.

The first video is below. I will post the second has soon as youtube finishes its thing.

Nice work Patrick, looks like you are making some progress with your transom battle. You will be glad you put together the wiring diagram.....it will save you a bunch of time later on. I color coded mine, yellow for lights, blue for instrument wires, etc....makes it handy for sorting out wiring issues later. You will be amazed at how much wire you use....and how many circuits you end up with. Looking forward to the second video!

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Great vids.
Your work shows how much effort and time you put into figuring out how to rework your transom. Always like seeing a plan work out right. :D

Need to follow your lead on the wiring diagram. I am not that far yet, but I can tell by watching your vids why I should be.

archbuilder has great advice on the color code too.

Thanks for the vids and keep up the great work.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Can't believe you are flatening out the transom like that. Seems to me it would add stress in other places by pulling in the transom to your center interior block. Think you should have built up the inside to the new piece and then built up the outside to make a flat spot in the center of the transom where the outdrive would mount. But what do I know!;)

Just hate to see you change the shape of a classic hull design. The curved transoms on the Chris Crafts really adds to the appeal of the boat imo.
