Nice vid on the tabbing and the KR to go with it. It makes the tabbing look so much more cool and fun..

Now I'm gunna have to make a sewing vid and put it to some home town J-ville Skynard !

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Permission to come aboard PMC?

After recently joining iBoats I've been picking about 1 reno thread per week and reading it all the way through. So far, I've learned a great deal about slippers, washing machines, go karts, racoons, and even a little about boats!

And I think, after seeing what you, Frisco, Oops and other glassers go through, I may have to side with Jas on my first reno!
Ouch, ack, owwww.... jeez, a bunch of people just threw brushes with hardened resin at me!

This year, on a very limited budget, we purchased our first boat. A 1980 Rinkerbuilt. She is glass, and in fine shape for her age, although the engine has a slight oil leak and the lifters or valves are making some noise. I'll be posting some video this fall and over the winter of the engine removal and fix up, and some other cosmetic fixes. But mine will be lipstick compared to the total gutting you've done.

Thanks for sharing your adventure and keep up the good work, and let me know where the go kart thread will be! :)

Ohh, don't you worry; I have got plenty of those myself. In fact, I use a few at my office for drink coasters. They work well and are a good conversation piece too...

I wish it actually made it more fun... just appears that way. I finished up tabbing two more compartments this weekend. I have 5 more to go as well as the long tabbing lay-up in the ski locker... I'll get there eventually... If anything can make sewing cool, it would by Skynard.

Absolutely... Would love to have you on board... and thanks for following along... Good luck with your project!!

As I have mentioned before, restoring a fiberglass work is indeed a hard, messy and expensive job (throwing an i/o and a transom rebuild into the mix spices it up even more). From an ownership, use, looks, enjoyment perspective, I prefer fiberglass boats (and I think I will like the i/o in this particular boat). However, from a restoration perspective, the aluminum boats with an outboard make awesome projects. They are safer, clean up quickly, easier to rig, easier to power up etc... I have been really impressed with the way some of the tinny projects on this forum have turned out. My next project will be a tinny fishing boat with an outboard.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

Patrick,
Good to talk to you today. Sorry about the technical difficulty my stupid, dumb***** smart phone was experiencing today. Left it charging in the truck for a while & it overheated when the sun changed location & it started to super heat my battery:facepalm:

About the 1st of those items, I have a bit to say, but ultimately all that I hope for is his speedy return & his presence will be greatly missed in his absence. And regret my hand in it.

On the 2nd item, I will start that thread up once there has been some movement on the current tin project:)

Lastly, the Starmada membership packet indicated the happy happy joy joy of 'freeing' a glasser from it's earthly burden. Those statements have no basis in fact nor have been proven by actual measurable testing. It was most definitely NOT fun.

By the way, at 'free' resident day at the landfill, I paid to dispose of 200-250gals of water in waterlogged foam. 100-125gals per boat:mad:

Apparently, based on my weight slip going in loaded & the outbound slip empty, I had 4700+lbs of boat. Together the boats when new had a dry weight @2000lbs. Deduct the 500lb trailer, had it weighed solo the day before the landfill run, Friday, for title & license, and thats 2200lbs of water:facepalm: dag nab it! Now I really need that pole barn...

Have a great afternoon, and hope you knocked it out of the park in court... Or filled a motion & won (?), or whatever legal mumbo jumbo you were up to:)

Great talking to you as well. Sorry about the land-fill debacle - (if it makes you feel any better, I was able to dump my starcraft glasser for $33.00 at the private land-fill... They didn't even weigh it; the guy just eye-balled and said -that'll be 33 bucks) :) There were no Perry Mason moments today... Just had to get the judge to sign something and record some docs. in the land records... Very mundane mumbo jumbo to say the least...

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

The 2200+/- lbs of water cost about $22:facepalm: it was more the principle of paying to dispose of water.........

Carp........... That's like almost 1/2 a gal of resin delivered!

Well, ya know what they say: "Every day can't be a Perry Mason kind of day in court" just like the CSI tv version of DNA & crime fighting is 'slightly' skewed...

Looking forward to seeing some action on a Lancer again soon.

Good to see you back at it. What I could see of the tabbing looked great.
Really enjoyed the vid and the KR. Just need to see more of them.
Have a great rest of the week.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

Okay... So little update: I was going to work on the boat yesterday and my 4 year old says "Daddy, I'm really ready for you to be done with that boat" (sort of stung a little bit)... The admiral/swmbo has been a great sport, but I can tell she is growing weary of the weekend road trips... Plus, I've been borrowing shop space for almost a year (and the 45 minute commute is starting to wear on me too)... So..........

I sold the boat....

Just kidding (what I actually did is):

Backed up the trailer (did a crack job of it by the way):

Then I moved the boat forward in her cradle and prepared her for launch:

Trailer_2.jpg

Then I cranked her onto the trailer and pulled away:

Trailer_3.jpg

Replaced the old "maypops" with some new tires with galvanized wheels (with a little help from the boy):

And brought her home and tucked her in for the night:

I'm pumped - should able to get more done working on her from home. I still have to go back out the shop every now and then (Paint booth; engine install, but I should be able to get the lion's share of what I need done from home in a much quicker fashion without having to disappear every weekend for extended time periods. :D

Great move man. Lord knows I wouldn't get a single thing accomplished if I had to drive any distance to work on my boat. Now you can jump in, complete a quick task, 20 minutes maybe, and jump back into father/husband duties. All progress towards the goal bro!

Now you have no excuse for not having daily progress posts :D Just kidding, it will be nice to step outside your door to be able to work on it.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Thanks for stopping by fellas.. Yeah, having the boat home is great. I was working on it in the driveway last night and just having the kids pop in to take a look or say hello was nice....

But...I think I have a problem.... As you guys know, I cradled the boat, because I was concerned about doing a stringer/foam job on my roller trailer. I think my front cradle may have created a bit of a pinch point on the front port side (see pic below). As I was looking at the boat this morning, I was like "Hmm, something doesn't look exactly right" (it sort of looks like somebody kicked my boat on the bottom strake and left a slight impression."

See pic below:

Trailer_Home_modified.png

After noticing this, I discovered that this is exactly where I had my cradle... (see pics on post 869)... Its also pretty much exactly where my stringer jumps the strake and intersects with a bulkhead... (already bedded and tabbed)...

I will try to video it so you guys can get a better look. It is not as pronounced on the starboard side. My concern is that my front cradle was creating a bit of a pinch point and that when I bedded and tabbed my stringers/bulkheads it sort of "stuck that way." My concern is that IF i have forced my hull out of its "molded" shape, then it may delam/separate one day?

Am I over-reacting? If you were me, would you guys worry about this (address it?) and if so, how?

Thanks fellas - you guys are great!

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

A closer shot, even if it goes out of focus in the foreground &/or background, along the plane of the hull may show that better. I can hardly tell it's there. But I haven't been up close to the hull for hours at a time either. With approximate size of affected area...

"Roughly it's @1' " or whatever
..... Ka-Peche??.

It looks like maybe the bow 'sagged' & allowed the cradle brace to create that divot?? Maybe....

Your bud oops would probably say something like:

no worries Pat, fill & fair, fill & fair, you just order up a Corona or 12 & I'll walk you right thru it, remotely thru your iPhone;)

Where is that guy anyway????

Conscientiously objecting to a valuable player placed on the IR list? Red card list?

He's good; He's on vacation (getting to enjoy his boat actually - must be nice!). He said to tell everyone hello and that he will back on line in usual fashion in a couple of days...).
