Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Hate to see all the work and effort and time spent worrying go down the tubes, but just look at all the knowledge and new skills you picked up on the way. Not counting all the new friends here on 1-boats. I just about have my little problem fixed on my hull and this boat was exactly what I wanted to fish from.
I agree with you 100% in your decision.
I have seen some amazing tin boats here on 1-boats. I have thought hard and long on some of the old starcrafts myself. I will own one some day.
Good luck in your new adventure and keep up with the i-boats crew here. Always enjoy your comments and vids.
Hope everything goes well with the thyroid problems.

patrick....

sorry i was so long getting back from our conversation.

don't get dejected by a setback bud.... its a glass boat and all can be fixed.

from the look of the vid..... its almost a non issue.

grind off the gell coat.... use a filler like poly fair then lay a csm...and 1708 over the fairing putty... then fair smooth and re gellcoat the area.

i wish i was closer bud.... that can be fixed in a very short time.

did you string line the hull for a hook?

I completely understand your logic . I love my MFG but it is not the fishing rig that I really want. I could even see myself going for a tinny to use back in the thousands of miles of salt marsh down here. But all my kids are grown and it does have some sentimental value so the mfg will definitely be kept.
Go get you a boat that suits your needs and have some fun with the family ! Maybe something like this..

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

As the tears started welling up in my eyes, the sweat was pouring off my brow, my body was beginning to convulse, and the sorrow began to overwhelm me as I was reading your post I realized that maybe I shouldn't be sitting on these hot coals...:D

Brother Patrick, it is all good...what you have learned, what you have shared, and what you have planned...in the end, no matter the outcome of all this craziness, the important thing and the best thing is the friendships we have created along the way and the really great folks on this site...whether you have a tinny, a glasser, or a dining room table turned boat, the bottom line is to enjoy and share the fun with the those that are the most valuable to you...

I will be looking forward to your soon to be acquired floating, fishing, motorized platform and all the neat things you are going to want to do to it and with it...

As always, your friend,
Gus

What is a man without his family...health and sanity?

Will miss seeing the great vids you have made...maybe show us one when you catch some nice fish?

I'm sure it will work out for you and can't wait to see what you embark on next.

Stay Happy!

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Guys, thanks so much for the kind replies. This has been a "team effort" from the start. Even though I have been the one itching and sweating, I know that you have been invested in this process as well. I know its deflating to see this project aborted mid-stream. Trust me, this was not a knee-jerk reaction to the recent set-back... Of course, that didn't help any. The more you get involved in a hobby, the more you learn what is right for you and what your preferences are. I knew nothing (ZERO) about boats (other than how to drive one and ski behind one) before I started this process. I didn't know my "***** from my elbow" (or should I say, stern from my starboard). Now, I have a much better idea of what kind of boat I need/want and what type of project suits my budget, skills, tools (or lack thereof) and shop space (or lack thereof). Plus, I have made some really great friends, a couple of whom are already helping me make a more informed decision on my next rig.

There are a couple of good candidates on the horizon, and I already got a call from a guy wanting to buy my engine and outdrive (30 minutes after I posted it on Craigslist). Hopefully, he will pull the trigger and I'll have some cash in the kitty to make my next score.

Thanks again for stopping by and for not hazing me.... I sort of put myself "out there" in a highly visible way with all the posts and videos, so its definitely a little humbling to say "yeah, I sort of think I need to go in a different direction."

Can't wait to start Season II.

Peace to all,

Patrick

Oh man. This is my second "sorry to hear" post I've made to you in a row. If it was just the problem you ran into, I would try to get you to take oops!' advice. But its clear from your reveal that this is the right decision for you. Good luck.

Sea ya...

Thanks C.K. I have been watching your thread. I look forward to the "downtime" between projects to catch up on some threads, including yours.

It's all good!

EDIT: Just saw the posts on the prior page about the go-Kart. Little Man has been very patient. I am going to borrow my brother's truck and bring it to my house. I will start a blogspot page or something so you guys can follow along and help me out.

Should be a good fall project - college football and Go-Kart building.

Oh Man!! Another thread I have been following is about to go to the way side. I totally understand where you are coming from. I only did a partial restore on my boat and it took me a long time to do and I am still not finished. I think that you have learned (and I have also) that you really got to LOVE to do this kind of work if you are going to restore a fiberglass boat. It is so funny you mention the important things in life...my wife and I joke when I talk about another project that it will be with another wife LOL. All joking aside she was right there with me working hard on boat. She was more help then she even knows.

Good luck to you...I look forward to seeing another project from you. Have fun with those youngins (Southern Illinois twang LOL) they grow up so fast. Enjoy every minute of it!!!!!

I give you credit for taking on such a task. My 1978, 19ft Chris Lancer has served me well and have no regrets for hanging on to it for all these years. Maybe some day, when your life slows down a bit, you will pull the cover off and finish the project. You obviously have your priorities in order and realize what is most important to you. Good job!

Sad to hear Patrick... But I'm sure you'll love your fishing boat! I'm on the downhill slope on my project so no turning back now!

I wish I was better at knowing what to say when a friend goes away. Your restore blog was a bright spot on many a boring or on eventful day while I was reading at my desk (No, I never read iboats forum on company time:redface:). Your positive attitude at going about this very daunting challenge was a regular inspiration. You're a fine fellow and enriched the community by being part of it. You'll be missed and I think we are all saddened to see you step back. I think we understand completely but still saddened nonetheless. Let us know how things are going now and then.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Guys:

Thanks so much for the kind words! I have enjoyed this process and you guys have been a huge part of that. Its been a great learning experience.... of the character building type:)

Here's a quick update:

This boat has been SOLD, yep, that's right. A really nice fella that lives about an hour from me has acquired this vessel and wants to finish the project. I am going to drop the rig off to him in the next day or so. He's got shop space on his property, etc... So, this rig that is near and dear to me will live to see another day!! He's been on iboats and has been reading the thread in anticipation of bringing her home.... I'm trying to get him to start a thread for the remainder of the build... Even if he doesn't, I may check in on him from time to time and lend a hand and snap a few pics.

Also, the drive line has been sold! It was picked up last night.... Loading an 800 pound engine on the back of a trailer was quite the chore, but she, too, will live to see another day in a 24' pleasure boat that is getting a power upgrade from a blown 4.3.

I have my eyes on a replacement rig.... You guys will just have to sit tight for a a little while, but hope to share some good news on that soon.... Send some good mojo my way for that.

Take care,
Patrick

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Well, guys, I'm officially cursed... In the brief 30 minutes since my last post, I got a call from the drive line buyer who says her mechanic discovered a hair-line crack in the block on the starboard side. He said he ran a leak test and it was not just a scratch....

So, if she brings that back, that will put a serious damper on my quest for a replacement project boat.

I said good Mojo guys...not bad Mojo.
