It has been debated a few times before, how to hook up an alternator, but I can't seem to find an illustration for this spare alternator I have.

It is the traditional Mando alternator for a Mercruiser from the late 80's.

The story is that I'm installing a 4.3 engine in a friends boat. It is some kind of a mix. The engine is originally a Yamaha, I have connected it to a Volvo Penta 290 drive, installed Mercruiser manifolds, alternator/powersteering pump bracket and made my own engine wiring harness with parts/wires from a Mercruiser harness. It works out fine, but the alternator that came with the Mercruiser harness is not charging. I have changed the brush assembly and refurbished the slip-rings, but that didn't help.

It has been connected like this.

Orange wire: + connection on the starter
Red/purple: connected to the 40 amp fuse, the terminal that is disconnected if the fuse blows.
Purple: + terminal on the ignition coil.

There are a few test that can be done, with a multimeter, haven't tried that yet, but I suspect that the regulator is faulty.

Now it comes; I have a spare alternator, from a Mercruiser 3.0. Perhaps that one is working. But there are three wires coming out of the regulator.

Red - Green - Black

How do I connect that?

This shows the diagrams for most alt that are used today.

I have actually seen that site, but thanks anyway.

Took off the regulator a few moments ago and couldn't help laughing. The three wires, that came out of the grommet on the regulator was connected directly to the brush assembly and the stator. The short wires that comes out of the regulator and normally are connected to these terminals, were cut off.

I guess that this regulator also is faulty and the guy I bought the alternator from, has hooked it to a remote regulator......
