Re: Marina launched my boat w/o plug!!!!

You don't say how old your boat is, but I wouldn't worry too much about the brief dunking beyond what they are doing. For one thing, lots of boats get dunked, raised, repaired and run on just fine--in my 40+ years of salt-water boating I've seen it too often including our own boats. Moreover, the boats are constantly exposed to salt air, which is just as bad as salt water itself, so in 10 years you will never know the difference, when you encounter a "salt problem" if it was natural or from this one brief event (I assume they hosed everything off right away--they don't rust until you bring them up!)

So while I don't blame you for being concerned, you will end up OK. Just talk to any waterman.

Totally agree, and I also give your marina high marks. I'd keep using these guys, too. Accidents can happen in any business, and these guys really owned up to it. Lousy experience for you, but it's nice that everybody involved (including you) sucked it up and did what they had to do to make it right.

Good luck and happy boating!

Have you considered your decking, floor stringers, and transom getting soaked. You might in the long run have wood rot starting from this event.

that won't be a concern for a brief dunking, and rot occurs way more with fresh water than with salt water. (wooden boat builders call fresh "sweet water" and regard it as the enemy)

Re: Marina launched my boat w/o plug!!!!

I went to see my boat last night after work. The head mechanic and another mechanic stayed after closing to show me everything they were doing. When I pulled up the yard worker who made the mistake in the first place met me at my car and admitted it was entirely his fault and he apologized in a very sincere manner. He said that he felt so bad about what he did to my boat that while the mechanics were working on boat he waxed and detailed the entire boat. It looks amazing. The bilge is so clean you can eat out of it. The mechanics spent all the time I wanted and explained everything, They had already installed the new higher capacity batteries with new battery trays and hold downs, As it turns out, it looks like they are replacing any questionable battery cables and other wires too. They had the engine pressure washed and coated with corrosion treatment. I am having them put in a new impeller in the water pump and new exhaust flappers while it is apart. I will pay for those parts and they are doing the labor for nothing while things are apart. They are waiting for the wiring harness and some other parts but it will be back together early next week. There is even a chance I could have it before the end of the weekend! So really, I will have missed at most one weekend.
When I first posted about this event I was reluctant to mention the name of the marina because I wanted to give them a chance to fix the problem. I can honestly say that I have been blown away by how well they have handled this situation at every step. ?It?s not the problem, It?s how it the problem is handled that defines you?, To that end, I am very pleased to tell you the name of this exceptional marina is Three Belles Marina in Ninatic, CT and based on this experience I highly recommend them.

Hell, I'm going to see if I can get your marina to "accidentally" leave the plug out on my boat! Sounds like you will likely get it back in better condition than when you were before.

Got your boat detailed and all those new parts too. Sounds like you came out better than all right. Always glad to hear about a reputable company. Thanks for sharing your experience even if it was somewhat traumatic at first.

Good to see that there are some companies that get it. Gotta figure that if he gave you a hard time about it he might end up buying you a new rig. Technically it sunk and his people were at fault. Then there's the whole reputation issue. Hard to measure the damage that can be avoided by making you happy. Does he (or anyone) offer used boat service contracts? Might feel a little more safe if you had an extended service contract in case you decided to relocate.

Re: Marina launched my boat w/o plug!!!!

these guys have gone way beyond a simple check.

normally what happens is that the electrical is dryed, cleaned, sprayed. the alt and starter are dryed and tested. pulling the motor is waaay over kill.
replacing those things is costing them approx 2k.

that is a company that does not want any problems......ill bet the yard boy got fired !

Nah oops, OP said they guy apoligized and detailed his boat after hours...

BUT, I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when that guy came into work the next day :D I bet he probably was very close to losing his job.... Can only Imagine the tongue lashing that ensued....

I wonder where you will buy your next boat, that level of service always pays off and they went so far beyond whatever could be expected of them it is hard to believe, nice to see a good stroy like this, normally all you hear about is how someone screwed up.

No, not fired. This marina now has one awesome employee. At least that is the way it should be. That is the way most of us were raised, when the company gives you an undeserved break, you remember it and give 100%. Hopefully it pays off for the employee and the company both. The company certainly got things right, hopefully the employee continues to catch on.

Re: Marina launched my boat w/o plug!!!!

Mancho,

LOL, No boating for us this holiday.

As the boat was being pulled out my 3 year old tugged at my shorts and said "but Daddy, I want to go on the boat" and she started crying with her big baby blues eyes. This was in front of the marina owner and his wife. I said to myself under my breath "good girl".

I'm sorry but this made me laugh. Cute.

My 13 year old would be in tears. She's the family member most likely to throw herself into the sinking boat yelling "Save her!" while the rest of us scramble for dry land.

I do hope this is all worked out for you. I'm sure the Marina Owner was sick about it - and I'm hoping for you that the have the intention and means to make this "better than before" for you.

I'm a big believer of "Everyone makes mistakes." It's how you own up to them that defines you.

Are you kidding? I live 1500 miles away and I'd buy my next boat there!! lol

But honestly, make sure they know they've received good attention here on Iboats. Too often we tell companies we'll tell everyone we know when they mess up, but forget to let them know that we've spread the word when they do good.
