Re: marine carpet?

Both Lowes and Home Depot have marine carpet. I bought some that was a match for what our boat came with to recover one hatch.

I replaced some interior parts on my last boat with the Home Depot outdoor/marine carpet in 2001. it still looked like new when I sold the boat last year.

My experience has been that the babes with the nicest bikinis prefer the boats with the nicest carpet and upholstery ....... :) :) :)

carpet holds water, mildew, grems, causes rot, does not let the boat completely dry. if those bikinis new what they were laying on, they would never get in your boat again. i associate boat carpet, as the same as that little rug the women insist on putting in front of the toilet, that we all pee on no matter how we try not to. the only thing is the boat carpet, doesn't get washed and dried each week.

i don't have carpet in my boats or home. hate it in the car.

Convenience for one...easier to clean the decks of fish blood and other spills. Also holds moisture and can mold/mildew. Not knocking those who have it in their rig, but I, too, prefer a plain ole deck.

Very true! ha ha ha

Once you have the luxury of removable snap-in carpets in a boat you can't go back. So much more comfortable with bear feet. But I'm talking for pleasure boats here. Moisture? The floor of the boat is fiberglass. Underneath the carpet is rubber. If they get wet you just remove them to dry indoors. No problem.

Now I don't see carpet in a fishing boat at all.

Re: marine carpet?

One good use of marine carpet is covering the bunker boards on the trailer. I also put a layer of tread from truck tires on the boards first and then cover them completely with the carpet. This gives a more cusioned suport. I don't think I need it, but it comforts my mind.

I live in the land of red water. Carpet here at best is a one year thing if it remains atractive. Astro Turf is another alternative for the boards.

I guess it depends somewhat on where you live. There are dry climates where persistant moisture is not a problem. I've never really had a mold or mildew problem in any of my boats and they're stored outdoors year round.

I've had both carpet and bare surfaced boats. Personally, I couldn't take the sound of sand being ground into the bare surfaces :-O Seems that no matter how careful we were, there was always some gritty sand/stone that got tracked into the boat.

I like carpet for its; comfort, sound deadening and appearance. I own a steam cleaner so keeping it clean is never an issue.

I am kinda with TD although I like the snap in. My last three boats all have carpet on a wood floor and I hate it. With that said, the snap in over a molded floor is a great compromise. My buddy's Chap has it and when we boat in salt he leaves it home, when we boat in fresh he uses it and it gets taken out, washed and stored until the boat comes out next time. Very good compromise and it is nice (and probably safer) with bare feet.

Re: marine carpet?

After re-doing the deck on my 88 Four Winns, I got rid of the carpet on the deck, I kept the carpet on the gunnels, because removing it would have required too much alteration in the interior. When I did the deck over I had the 'glass shop gelcoat the deck with anti-skid in it, no carpet to hold moisture.
BTW, for those with plywood floors and carpet, the worst rot was under the seat mounts, screw holes not sealed, and carpet didn't let any moisture evaporate, it would stay wet for months.

Re: marine carpet?

Carpet or not obviously depends on the type and usage of the boat. Carpet and upholstery in a boat used for fishing strikes me as particularly stupid. My boat will NEVER see any stinkin' fish so I prefer comfortable upholstery and carpet.

Carpet glued to a wooden deck is also less than desirable in my opinion if you intend to keep the boat for more than a few years. Almost garanteed that there will be some moisture trapped under it around the edges, seams, screw holes, etc, just waiting to rot out the deck.

As PhatBoyC says,
Once you have the luxury of removable snap-in carpets in a boat you can't go back.

High quality snap-in carpet with a full fiberglass liner is great. If you get water under the rubber carpet backing (skiing, tubing, etc) snap it out and let it dry. If you think the carpet is dirty clean it up at a carwash then snap it out and let it dry underneath. Or just snap it out and take it to the carwash.

And you don't have the issue with the deck slowly rotting underneath it.

Oh and it goes without saying, look for Berber 100% Nylon type 6 or 6.6 carpet. The only way to go. ;)
