I have a 1965 7.5 McCulloh. The carb. is a Marvel-Shebler SUM. Have been having A little carb problem so I have the carb apart. The float setting is way off.

The spring that is on the float valve hinge shaft holds the float in the up/closed position. The manual only says to note the spring position and install it the way it was removed. The spring position seems backwards to me. If someone has installed the spring wrong I don't want to follow in their footsteps.

If anyone is familiar with this carb. I would appreciate any help.
Thanks Bob R.

Re: Marvel - Shebler Carb. float.

I have found the same issue. My Marvel Schebler Sum Carb on my 7.5 HP Mcculloch (Sears) outboard, which I received in a non-working condition, seems to me to be put together wrong. The float is supported by the spring in the up position. This would appear to be the closed position. I'm thinking the spring should be pushing down on the float, just to keep it from bouncing around in rough water. The instructions furnished by the previous writer (thanks for your help) don't address which way the spring should be installed, only that you should note the position and re-install it the way it came out. Do we have anyone who has actually seen one of these carburetors that works and actually knows which way the spring should be installed? Failing that, does anyone have a manual from Marvel schebler that includes the SUM carb?
Regards, and thanks
Chris

Re: Marvel - Shebler Carb. float. UPDATE

I found some detailed information for the older SEARS outboards.

http://www.theoldglassboats.com/TOG...&_tune-up/Sears_Outboard_Repair_&_tune-up.pdf
This link as to a book "Glens sears outboard motor repair and tune up guide" which covers 1-2-3 cylinder engines since 1960. It goes into detail about the Marvel Schebler SUM carburetor that I didn't have before including that the float should be spring loaded to the top, not the bottom.
It's 184 page and took a long time to load but it was worth the wait. If you have one of those Sears Gamefisher or Ted Williams small outboards, you can probably use this info.

Thanks for the manual;I had reassembled my carb. I got lucky and put it together the way I found it instead of the way my reasoning told me it should be.
The manual is a great find and I appreciate you taking the time to upload so everyone can add it to their knowledge base.
Thanks again Bob R.
