Could a 60 amp maxi fuse be used to protect 80 pound thrust minn-kota terrova trolling motor wiring rather than a marine grade 60 amp breaker.Any pros or cons to either one other than having to carry extra fuses.

Re: Maxi fuse

It could. No real cons to a fuse, except like you noted, that you should carry extras.

Re: Maxi fuse

I recently changed over to the ATU blade fuses simply because their easy to find.

Re: Maxi fuse

If you haven't seen one of those or their holder in person you may be shocked by how much bigger they are than the standard blade fuses.

Re: Maxi fuse

fuses are diffrent than breakers.
a fuse is nothing more than a wire that is designed to heat up at a certain ampage until it fails. they are designated as instant, time delayed and current limiting amoung other things
a breaker is either thermal or magnetic or both. they work by either winding a wire around a pin to make a magnet that will unlatch the breaker or they have a wire that will heat a soldered connection or metal strip to unlatch the breaker.

a trolling motor may cause a surge when starting that will overload a fuse for point something of a second that may cause the fuse to blow unless it is a time delayed fuse. a breaker generally is slower to respond so it rides out this surge better.

will it matter on your boat....proberly not but i would surgest the largest fuse the trolling motor and wiring on the boat allows.

Thanks for all the replies. Gives me a second option to think about. Cheaper to.

Re: Maxi fuse

No doubt about it - a manual reset breaker is the way to go.
