Re: Maxxis Tires???

"I have 4 16" maxxis on my fifth wheel which weighs around 12,000 lbs.... I tow at 80 mph with a jeep on a towbar behind it.... absolutely rock solid with no noticable sway and so far with several 1000 mile trips with some through 100 deg + desert conditions"

Isn't that a little fast - just because you have made several 1000 mile trips doesn't make it safe.

Re: Maxxis Tires???

of course it's fast, Never made any claim that it was or was not safe.... Anyone who reads statistics should be able to figure out tha operating any vehicle on a public road can not be defined as safe.....

The situation I explained occurs on flat ground straight road light traffic and excelent visibility in 70 mph speed zone..... But then That has NOTHING to do with the case at hand..... The point is that the tires handle that well with no signs of cupping wear or damage of any kind..... I always put my hand on every tire and every wheel hub when stopping for fuel...... The tires have never showed any signs of overheating...... if there is anything that kills tires it's high speed high temps and heavy loads.... This thread is not about safe towing speeds but rather about the durability of maxxis tires

I have had more than my fair share of blowouts with other brands and blowouts can do ALOT of damage to an rv

I am very pleased with the maxxis tires

Re: Maxxis Tires???

My tire guy tells me the lifetime on a tire is 5-6 years. That is from the time it is made on the line to when you should replace it. The problem is tires will crack and stiffen, even if never exposed to weather or the sun due to their always loosing some of their component chemicals. Ever smell that new tire smell, that's the volatiles blowing off. And as those volatiles blow off, the tire looses strength, flexibility, etc.

His suggestion, buy the newest tires you can locate (date of manufacture) and protect them from the sun/weather as best you can. Just expect to replace them in 5 or 6 years for safety and piece of mind.

I just bought Maxxis tires from Gripston also.

I did a tire search as well and the only tire that had zero negative feedback was the Maxxis.

I finnaly got smart and asked the same question on the RV.net forum. They have millions of miles of towing experience all packed into one forum. I got the same result of zero negative feedback there.

Do you just take it to a tire store to mount and balance for those who buy tires online?

Just ordered a couple of Maxxis from a local wholesaler today. He recommended Hirun tires with new wheels since I should change them every 3 years or so. For 20 bucks difference I'll buy the Maxxis and use my old wheels.

After my stock tires on my 18 month old RV decided to dry rot, I bought 4 maxxis radials and I noticed a much better towing experience over the bias ply that were on there.

I just run cheap used load range D 155 inch truck tires and have never had a problem on 3 boat trailers and used E range the two flatbeds we haul hay with every summer.

I may be from the country but I dont know anyone who has ever spent money on new tires for a trailer. As long as they look good and have no cracks or bulges their good.

Oh and ive never had one blow out on me.

Just to mount and balance? Holy Cow!

I had all 4 changed on my RV and balanced for about 40 bucks.
Switched to radials and what a better ride.

Yes, that's to take my old tires off and put on new ones. Balance as well. I thought it was expensive as well. Might have to call around.

Thats horrible advice. I've had blow outs... and they are not fun when the tire shreds and slaps the side of your glossy hull or when the tire pulls all the wiring out one side of the trailer. Changing one on the side of the interstate with cars blowing by you at 80 mph isn't any fun either.

A good rule of thumb is to replace your tires every 4 years.... regardless of what they look like. Its cheap insurance that could save your life or the lives of others.

Since when is spending $500 on tires you don't need cheap insurance?
