Okay... Removed all splashwell screws, transom nut and bolts. Had to borrow the engine hoist and lift the main piece out:

Came out pretty easy and is very wet and rotted.

Needed to remove transducer wire. If anyone needs a fishfinder, it's free. I'm getting a new unit next week.

I need to clean the inside and outside:

Glad that it came out in one piece:

Re: May I join? Starcraft SS 16

It's been a tough week, waiting to get this small job back together. I was pretty much halfway done with the transom replacement the first day. After the last post, I was able to cut the two pieces, and sand them down to the shape of the boat. I'm starting to feel like i'm putting to much thought into it.

After test fitting the new piece, there seems to be a small 1/8" gap between the new wood and the splashwell. I've been really thinking about covering the area thats exposed to the splashwell with fiberglass. I wonder how that would work out.

Hopefully I can complete the job this weekend.

Glassing would probably work but it would take a few applications to build up 1/8 inch. How about a wood strip to fill the gap and then a bead of 3M to seal the edge.

I guess I'll find out home much space is left when I finish bonding the two pieces of ply together.

It seems my spending is starting to get out of hand.

I decided to go with West Systems epoxy and hardener. I also bought:

2 sets of wood bits
Stainless nuts and bolts
Steering wheel
stainless transom u-bolts
motorwell boot
wire loom
sandpaper
tube of 5200

and on and on...

I escaped without buying a $500 Humminbird 597 ci HD fish finder/gps combo from Cabelas. It's on sale, but they were out of stock. Someone please help!

No freaking way I am going to help other than to tell you to go get a rain check on the Hummingbird. If that is what you want and it is on sale now. The wife got me a Lowrance Elite 5 Gold for Christmas and it is still in the box:cool:. Also have an anchor nest sitting right here next to me now as well.

I will have to take a pic of the stuff that I have picked up lately. Lets see, all the tools to do an outdrive alignment and boot install. Pneumatic pop rivet gun, impact hammer for solid rivets, rivet set for solid rivets, a detail sander, and the list continues. Have gluvit, tube of 4200 and 5200, ZC primer.

Going to order my epoxy this week, get plywood, try to order new steering, motor controls, control cables, and tons of other stuff:eek:.

And am also trying to sell a boat and trailer, another boat trailer, and some other stuff I took off the glasser I cut up.

So just keep at it buddy, you are doing just fine with how you are going:D At least you are not as out of control as I am dude.

Concept 10 Are you sure the 1/8 gap won't close when you pull th two sheets of Aluminum back together?? I would guess the gap is a problem that was caused by warping from the wet Transom, I woud check it closer as you don't want it any thicker nor to thin. . Two 3/4 inch sheets bonded should fill it properly.

Concept, I think Puget's right on that aluminum. When I heated mine to dry out the plywood before I sealed it, it pulled away from the transom. moved the halogen lights and it went right back in. I heated it before I put on epoxy on the back, and all around the holes drilled, and it furnished me with a small area to get the epoxy on that side of the transom. Moved the heat and it came right back to the transom. Somehow I don't think that will work for my second coat tho.
And you're doin good, except for that minor faux pas with the fish finder. Why should you be on good terms with your wife. If you read a lot of these threads, I think most of us are in the same shape. My easy chair is gettin real comfortable.

Good terms? Haha! She hates this whole boat/fishing thing and thinks it's a phase I'm going through. She doesn't know, but I will never part with this boat, unless I find a 22' or 18' V5!!

I prepped the transom last night and clamped them together to cure overnight. It seems pretty strong and now I've just returned from HD with more supplies. I still have to drill the holes, a little sanding and finish covering the entire piece with epoxy.

I also need to start investigating paint since I plan on repainting the splash well, the exposed wood and back of the transom. I will make sure to order that online to save money. There's no rush.

I had to find some of those twist nails that secures the transom top piece in place.

I also bought a piece of plastic to replace the wood on the outside. It's pretty tough, but cost me $17. I've been thinking about EZ's advise about leaving that piece off, and decided to go with the plastic.

Pictures will follow shorty.

Hopefully , if I can find where I hid my rivets, I can get the decking in today, and straighten my engine. I finished my second coat on the transom this morning. A couple more days sealing the outside up, I got a double hull, and I'll either be ready to paint, or if a contact goes thru get a top sewn. In another thead I was reading where Bondo says if we use rustoleum we need majic. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=473098 That addresses every problem I have with rustoleum, except my own sloppiness. Now I find I have another problem, as I epoxied the outside of the hull. It takes a different kind of paint. I knew that just sometimes I don't think.

Re: May I join? Starcraft SS 16

Made a long post the other day, and clicked the wrong button and poof... GONE!

Oh well, Quick update:

Transom job is getting close to two weeks! (or is that three?) Could have possibly finished last weekend, but was rained out. I was able to bond the two pieces of ply together with the expensive a heck West Systems epoxy:

IMG_1387.jpg

The bonding was straight forward, and I then came the disappointment. Didn't have enough hardener to coat the entire transom, so I gave up after I was able to complete one side.

I went ahead and installed the wood into the boat:
IMG_1408.jpg

I was about to complete the install, but I wasn't satisfied... so I took everything out and went ahead and bought more resin and hardener. This time another brand. A lot thicker, shorter working life, but compare against that dry junk in the earlier picture:

IMG_1411.jpg

Now it's almost 12:15 and i'm heading back outside to paint the transom (prep work from earlier):
IMG_1417.jpg

I also decided to change the splashwell from blue to white and I will be installing a new rubber boot..

more updates soon....

Using that West System must be painful on the budget. Good progress man!

Nice Work. It always takes longer than you think it will. I'm currently rebuilding my bow seats, I hoped to do it in a weekend, but that didn't happen.
Keep it up, you'll be enjoying it soon enough.
Do you still have the fish finder? I'll take it if you do. I'll send you some full size tracings of all my bow parts if it will help you.
Let me know.

Have patience getting it together, you're going faster than me. Course Texas usually has a bit warmer temps then Idaho. Hope you missed most of the bad weather.

Yes, I will never again in use this product, especially from local vendors.

1 qt. resin: $38 + hardener: $20 + pumps $14... wasnt enough to coat and bond the transom (Didn't have enough hardener).

Sure. I will send you the fish finder, if you think it's worth it. (Humminbird model Eagle Wide 100?)

Re: May I join? Starcraft SS 16

Another update: When I get the time, I will make sure to post my conclusions on this transom job. This is the first major little project that I have completed. I'm about 99% done...

I wasn't satisfied with the coat that the West Systems resin gave me. I bought some Interlux Epiglass. Three coats of resin baby:

IMG_1431.jpg

I also knocked out the dash while I had the epoxy going:
IMG_1433.jpg

I made sure to put all of the screws back into the splashwell (haha):

Rustoleum rattle-can should last me this this summer:

2 AM outside and neighbors think i'm crazy for working on the boat all night:

I have to get back on the water!
