Hi,
I rebuilt and installed a Volvo Penta 3.0 litre engine, 2001. It has a SX outdrive. To check it was running I ran it briefly a couple of times with the impeller off and no water circulating through it. The next day I had the water circulating through from the ear muffs. I spent a long time cranking over the engine before it started. When it did start there what a whinning/ rubbing noise that seemed at the same speed as engine speed, from back of engine. Is the gimble bearing in the outdrive gone because of no water running through it? The outdrive does seem to now be vibriting alot. I am going to decouple the engine from the outdrive and run the engine to see is the noise still there.

What else could be damaged with not water circulating to give this noise?
Can a new main bearing go with continued cranking, if the engine has done less than a hour running?
Thanks,
Shane.

if you didnt use any water to cool the block, I would think you could have hooped the motor?

I didn't have the pulley belt fitted so the engine circulating pump wasn't spinning.
I didn't use the alignment tool. I didn't have the sterndrive off and as I haven?t adjusted any of the engine mounts the engine can only go back in to the position that it can out of? Also the mounting legs at the back of the engine do no support until the splined shaft is in the coupler so how could the alignment tool be used? I didnt have the mounting bolts completely torqued down but were tight.

This was the gimble bearing that failed as saltwater go in there. I am currently trying to get out the bearing seal. You'll know if its this bearing wwhen you turn the steering wheel.
