Ya Rabidfish, a real working system that rates the techs ability would be great. With respect to the service guys here that know their stuff. Seen "techs" with loads of wall paper that I would not let tune my wheelbarrow. No offence rodbolt but the fact you can correctly trouble shoot/diagnose, service and repair what you can speaks volumes more to me than any of your cirts.

Here is how I think a potential customer sees it.

If I am a new/relatively new boat owner, I would look for a shop that is inexpensive and fast. That actually should tell you something. It should say that they don't value their services, and the locals dont value their services either.

It's kinda like the old system of finding a restaraunt on the highway... If the parking lot is crowded, the food is usually pretty good.

We all want to save time and money, but you really do get what you pay for. Anyone can fix a boat when things go well. It takes a really good tech to know what to do when things go bad. (reference any of Rodbolts responses to repairing drive units damaged by saltwater...)

A boat owner is simply better off to find a good tech, be a loyal customer of his, and live with his schedule and pricing. My best customers always get the breaks when it comes to an emergency or a break on the bill... Imagine that!

its not about the paper on the wall its about giveing people a place to go for service that has ment some standard

and if there is a problem giveing them a meanfull way to get it resolved

i do not do anything on my cars beyond and oil change because there there is a working system in place to do this both from the car maker and the state

tommays

It sounds like to me the so call mechanic didn't know what he was talking about and the simple fact that he dismissed your suggestion that fixed the problem makes him look like even more of an idiot. Also since he broke a part that wasn't even the issue then he should fix that for free.In the end you should have charged him for you time (just as valuable as his ) and educating this so called mechanic.

If your a surgeon you better know where to cut because if you cut off the wrong part then youwill pay for it.

The Association of Marine Technicians is working closely with NMMA and ABYC to set standards and training for marine technicians. It is set up similar to the ASE in the automotive trade.

www.am-tech.org for more info

It does not make one a good tech, but it "certifies" that he (or she) meets a minimum critera and testing to AM-TECH specifications.

That sounds great seahorse.....(a bit of sarcasm now) It would be nice if I could pay a reduced rate for the tech meeting the minimum criteria, ya know for stuff like regularly scheduled maintenance. And I'd be happy to pay full shop rate for the tech that knows his stuff like the back of his hand. Unfortunately ya gott'a pay the same shop rate for both to find out which is which.

Kinda like TC-W3 outboard oil, huh?, pay less for something that meets minimum specs and pay more for quality stuff from the manufacturers.

seahorse
while I applaud the ASE certs( took some and passed them myself years ago) and I applaud the nmma and other marine tech certs. in the end it comes down to the pride the tech has.
I know some good techs that trip themselves daily. and some of it is the service writer. okay a lot of it is the service writer. he will write"replace port seawater pump. I will interpet the dann thang smoked till it died and only now will the customer bring it in, he is saving money ya know. my first inclination that the service writer accepted the customers lies is when I take off the hood and the coils are melted to the head and all the paint is blistered and the boots are exploded. then I have to stop, still on the time clock though, and call the customer and ask W T F. invariably the answer is no it never got hot, the automatic shut down kicked in. after the compression test I tell them its toast and they whine it only happened once.
so its worse than a Dr. my patients cant speak but they cannot lie either. I will find the cause. try to adjust your stories to fit :)

Rodbolt,

Yep, been there a lot of times. The most common thing is "tune up motor" then when it's done the customer asks if that miss that happens after running for several hours is fixed, etc.

Some folks think a tune up is a cure-all for any motor ill, when in fact it is only a series of tests, lubrications, and adjustments that are required about every 100 hours.

Next time, just fix it yourself, and leave him out of it. :D If you can't fix it yourself, next time take your business to the marina with fair prices.

Although I can see both sides of this, I tend to agree with the majority of the board on this one. YOU called him, HE came to you on HIS time and expense with the understanding that this WAS NOT going to be free......NO MATTER what the outcome.......sorry man, count your blessings that it wasn't something really major......it coulda been a whole lot worse.

ps.......I can't believe Don hasn't jumped on this thread with both feet. :)

Man oh man, I just noticed the date on this thread.........who dug it up from the grave??

Re: mechanics rates>>>?? WOW

Why you guys bringing back a 3 year old post?

But heres my 2 cents. Nobody gets to eat except the guy who owns the boat.

You called him in pay him. Don't like his work, Don't call him again.

Nobody works for nothing.

Re: mechanics rates>>>?? WOW

HE intentionally broke it to see if it was clogged..

Are you sure he broke it intentionally? i am a mechanic. . automotive not marine, but i accidentally break stuff all the time commin apart. yeah it sucks.

if we break it, we buy it.

Although i am with you on the "he didn't fix your problem" issue. He was justified in getting labor for looking at it though.

lesson learned: next time come to iboats first!! lol

anyways, you got it fixed so its all good.

Re: mechanics rates>>>?? WOW

Just my point of view. I'm a x autotech with 25 years of service . I was fully certified had years of manufactures training, years of experience working flat rate. flat rate requires you to be right almost all the time and you have to stand behind your repair because when it comes back and you need to do it agian it's like you punched out for lunch, you don't get paid again. Add to that that you had to buy your own tools of which I have about 30k worth and I didn't buy everything I wanted or needed. Add to that your under a time line no matter what you run into, most repairs are in a book and thats what your going to get paid. Add to that all the time your road testing, getting prices of parts, waiting for parts, pushing the car thru the snow into the shop, scrapping the 1/2 inch of ice off the windows of a car that was there over night or days, your not getting paid for that. Now it comes to actually doing what your paid for ,finding out the problem and fixing it all above added together needs to come under the book time alloted for what ended up being wrong with the car. So sometimes you just have to give a guy a break even if he faulters in your eyes. Maybe he's had a bad night, week,or maybe he has a mother dieing of cancer or a child at home that has a high fever that the doctor can't tell you why,all these things go on and we still come to work and most of us try our best because it sucks to fail even for us. I say x-autotech because at 40 years old I got out and now I work as an electrician for the rialroad and work on 3 million dollar locomotives and I'm still not always right but I try like hell. But the big deal is I get paid for every minute I'm there. I'm loven life now. Too bad the repair business has lost alot of great techs due to the way people can hardly ever give you a break and everyone is always counting minutes and god help you if you make a mistake and want payed for trying.
