Re: Merc 115 1974 serial 3272927(no spark!!!)

Well, the waiting game begins. I have a few people trying to source a switch box local. Clams Canino has a great one available with a warranty but im afraid its over my budget so i'll have to keep looking.

Just out of curiosity guys, how do these motors run. I used to have a 1979 merc 500 4 cyl. It idled a little rough and didn't sound so hot. I really hope that the extra 2 cylinders make for a smoother engine. How will it feel power wise in compared to my 50hp merc? Does anyone know the "cc" of the 1150 engine, perhaps 1150?

Just so I know what to expect when I get her started.

I also noticed that only 2 of the carbs have choke plates on this model but one of them has broken off. Do I need to get another one or will it work fine just choking 1 carb?

I'd like to know the pros and cons to my engine and are there any particular checks or adjustments I should make....

Thanks

Stan

Stan,
That motor only used 2 choke plates. You should replace the broken one as this motor NEEDS to be fully choked to get it running. When that motor is adjusted correctly it will "purr like a kitten" Your motor likes to run at full WOT, so make sure you have it propped to do just that. Good luck my freind.

Capacity of "1150", 115 hp engine is 100 cubic inches (bit over 1.6 litres).

Being a crossflow engine they idle quite nicely. Certainly better than a 'looper'. As Pierre said prop it to run WOT at 5500. Any less and you'll be overloading the engine, and that reflects all the way through the rev range, not just at wide open.

If you're confident enough to tackle setting up the timing and sync I'll send you the details.

Chris...........

Stan,

I've just had a look at the prop you bought. Sorry but it won't fit your engine. It's for the V6 outboards and Stern drives (I/O). Your engine has a 4 1/4" gear housing and that prop is for 4 3/4" housings.

Chris...............

P.S. If the price is right I may be interested in buying it from you.

Heck, ill just concentrate on the engine for now, are any of you guys on msn messenger?

Id love for your help and advice on timing and sync Chris, a very kind offer. Im very confident that i will be capable of doing any manual work on the engine myself but theres no substitute for other peoples experience.

I recon that this engine will need a decarb very badly but im unable to get the Seafoam cleaner in Scotland. Even checked e-bay. Is there no company that sells it online that will ship to the uk? hmmm.

Stan,

I've just checked my parts catalogue and it calls out the same part number for the 1250 and your engine. So it should fit. Well done.

And it beats the $332 the shops want for them!

Chris..........

Re: Merc 115 1974 serial 3272927(no spark!!!)

Why do things take so long, it will probably take weeks for my switchbox to arrive with me and until that happens i'll not know if my engine works!!! Its soooo frustrating, I suppose i'll just have to bide my time! What to do in the mean time though??? Boring!
