I can hear it now you all are gonna love this one. First off the wiring on this engine was not good so I just need to make sure that I am correctly identifying what I have done to start the motor.

Here is the reference for wiring:
http://www.maxrules.com/oldmercs/Wiring/1966ona/35.pdf

I have connected the Red, White, Brown, and Yellow(Starter Solenoid) wires to the 12v battery via a switch system. The yellow is on a mometary switch since it just is for the starter.

I need to know what voltage I should be recieving on the green wire from the switch box to the coil which I believe needs to be 100+? Also need to know what voltage I should be recieving from the Red wire off the rectifier and thus from the stator?

I have had it running even a full tank of fuel ran through it but seems to be running cold. So I am replacing all the wires, plug wires, coil wire etc.... in attempt to get it firing better.

So I am checking my switchbox and stator. Can anybody tell me what the original Salmon wire ran too? It seems to go away at the connection for the housing.

Also is there a hotter plug that I can run to replace the Champion L78V's preferibly with an electrode since these are non electrode air gap plugs. And can I use a electode gap plug safely?

This is my plan for the weekend so please let me know if there are any other recommendations.

It seems to try to fire up right away but then after the initial try it wont light up again.

The salmon colored wire is not used on your 1350 it is in the box harness so if the box is used on a 4 cyl. with driver ign. on your rig it just stops at the engine plug---Bob

Re: Merc 1971 1350

Thanks Bob. One less thing I have to worry about. I hear that Mercurys around this time/make they had stator problems. How could I test the stator? I have taken a voltage reading from one of the yellow/red wires but it doesn't make any sense. First off I have a digital ohm meter so I think I really need one with a needle. It was jumping +300v but nothing accurate didn't hold steady. What you think?

Also it doesn't seem to shift into either forward or reverse. I can rev it out pretty good but no forward or reverse. The prop never turns.

I have two wires running out of the bottom end not sure what they are but I don't think they would have anything to do with the gears?

Can anybody point me in the right direction here?

Ok got the prop to turn in forward but nothing else and it never seems to spin very fast really slow. It is always racheting.

Re: Merc 1971 1350

That stator is pretty trouble free, start the engine with a volt meter hooked to the battery, if you have a voltage increase the alt. is working it's only a 6 amp at wot alt. The unit may have a bad clutch dog or a bad shift shaft, you will probably have to pull the carrier to ck that out---Bob

Re: Merc 1971 1350

Thanks again Bob but unfortunatly my dumbarseness was the fault on the no forward or reverse. In the manual or atleast seloconline.com it shows the second lever as the cold start lever which it was not it is the god dern throttle.

So yes I had the cables reversed.

Thanks Bob Im sure Ill be on the water soon. If I can Ill post up some pics of it before and after for you guys.

Im still not getting good fire on all pistons but Im sure it will be better when I get the new wires etc....

Also want to say thanks to everyone that has helped me out.

Thanks
OpK
www.brothersinwar.com

Re: Merc 1971 1350

Do NOT use anything but the air-gap plugs - they will kill it. The 1350 is a cold blooded beast, but if you do anything unnatural to "warm it up"
it'll melt pistons immediately.

Get the service manual and learn your motor, properly set up is will serve you well. A mistake here or there will kill it dead.

-W

Re: Merc 1971 1350

Fellas can you tell me if by chance that if they had bought a new block for this it would have the number 852-3884? Also it has a S above the dash.

Im also running 90 psi on a few pistons and then 120 on the others. Is this within operational limits?

Thanks

Ok here is an update I ran the test cold Ill run it again tomorrow or this weekend. Sorry. Also I ran the test with all plugs in and only the plug I was testing out. So Ill run again this weekend when I can.

Re: Merc 1971 1350

Try de-carbing the motor with Mercury Power Tune. A few times if needed once it's running.

Those numbers are low. Stuck rings are very common as they get older.

-W

Re: Merc 1971 1350

Thanks ordered the Power Tune from oldmercs.com and will post results on it this weekend. What is the procedure for using the stuff? Just spray it in the sparkplug holes with the motor tilted all the way up and wait? how long? Has anybody else used this stuff with success?

Also just wondering but is there an easy way for me to get a peak at the side of the pistons by removing one of the covers off either side without having to buy the gaskets? Would it be better to use the Power Tune through the side? Is there anything like Slick50 for 2 stroke engines? What do you think of Microlon?

Thanks
