Hey all,

Searched forums and found some helpful topics, but not totally what is happening in my world, so here goes!

1999 Larson 254 with Merc 5.7 and Alpha drive. Boat was well maintained and had 51 hours on it when I bought it in spring. I have since put on 33 nearly trouble-free hours.

Early in season, after 11 hours or so, under heavy load (4 ppl + large dad-n-law) and in also in chop would get what sounded like a lifter tap at higher RPMs. Always made power just fine, but I backed her off just the same. I assumed it was a mildly used engine not used to normal running, and had the valves adjusted. Seemed to work, didn't hear noise again and timing was just fine. Ran like a top.

Last month, we go on vaca and it sits in the salt water for about 3.5 weeks, drive down. Tank was just below 1/4 full. On last trip oil pressure signal would sound occassionally at starting for around 30 seconds, but gauge read 40-50.

Came back to lots of growth on trim tabs and even on drive (this worried me), I scraped and cleaned most of it off. But now that rattle is back with a vengeance and she is running rough and occasionally stalls. I added about 5 gals of gas with stabilizer, ran it, changed the fuel filter (some water in it, but not much), changed the PCV.

Symptoms on first ride:
The
  • at first the boat didn't want get on plane very easy, but did
  • then the rattle started again, but now comes at much lower RPM (2200), I back it down right away
  • will occassionally stall at idle, but rare
  • Oil pressure gauge is reading 40-50, but low pressure warning signal sounds for a minute when starting. While running and warmed up, gauge will occasionally jump down then come back up. Sometimes even read high, over 60, then come back down.
  • Temp stays normal around 160 ish

Oil is normal color and at full mark when warmed up.
No noises or sound when idling or under low RPM power

It's scheduled to come out for storage on Saturday. I just need to idle over to marina, plan on topping off fuel, and out she comes. I will be having a mechanic winterize and will have him check this out too.

What are the thoughts here so I'm confident he's taking the right steps?
    Thanks!

The rattle could be anything. It sounds like you have already gone through the engine steps, full of oil, valves adjusted, etc. It could be a burnt valve, or a good bit of carbon buildup. Have you check the the plugs for excess carbon?

If not the engine, could it be a problem in the U joints in the drive or something in the Lower Unit. I would definetly have that mechinc check it out...

This rattling could be pinging. Before winterization, I would first get the timing checked, along with the advance timeing, to make sure it's advancing.
Also have a proper compression test done.
Lean running could also be the cause and you may need to check your boats fuel system under load in the water to check it.
Be sure to check the fuel filter water seperator for water when it gets changed during winterization. You NEED to know what is in the old filter.
Is this engine fuel injected or carbed? Mercruiser makes them both ways.

changed the fuel filter (some water in it, but not much),

Ayuh,... I'm with Don,... Sounds like Detonation to Me...
It could need a Tune Up, or I'm thinkin' it's going Lean...

Maybe a bad case of "fuel-seperation" and it`s trying to run on the ethanol mix?

Thanks all.

It's carb'd and has a Thunderbolt ignition.

Do you think the oil pressure variations are gauge or sending unit problems?

Fuel filter was changed out last weekend and didn't look all that bad.

The problem is I have to get it to a haul out point saturday and I don't want to cause additional damage. Idling it's sounds fine, but I don't want to push it.

Nice time for this to happen, thus is the joy of boat ownership!

It didn't look too bad? It shouldn?t look bad at all when you take it out. The ethanol in the gas keeps the fuel system clean. If you see anything on the filter it means there is some junk in your fuel system. Fuel filter should come out perfectly clean if you?re going to rule out the fuel system. And then you also mentioned a little bit of water in the separator..... you have a fuel issue.

Sorry, figure of speach. The fuel looked normal and if there was water in it, it wasn't enough for me to observe it

If you had water in the filter there is more in the tank, and possibly the carb bowl. Adding gas won't get the water out.

When you say the filter, I take it you mean the fuel / water separator?

possibly the carb bowl. Adding gas won't get the water out.

I had a similar situation a few years ago with a brand new crate engine. Turns out the water settled in the bowl of the carb. Thought it would mix and burn out, but it did not. Carb needed to be disassembled and cleaned. Then it ran great.

Idling it over to the marina shouldn't cause any more issues for you.

I hope not. The Marina is 6-7 miles away

Got someone to look at it, but tomorrow is a wash in NE, winds, rain and such.

Nice

Re: Merc 5.7 engine rattling after sitting 1 month

Bump.

Cold ride, but the full canvas helped! What really sucked was chop. Rough out there with a noreaster coming in later that evening. Took about 1.5 hrs.

Anyway, got some news. Upon arriving at the boat and starting her up, the "oil pressure" alarm went off again and wallah, the drive oil was down below the "add" line. I filled it up for the drive to the marina, alarm ceased, but the rattling remained under load. Now after sitting for a month, I'm assuming this leaked from somewhere, possible internally? This makes more sense than an engine suddenly "detonating" with no changes in operating conditions for one month. a slow leak in drive oil is a different story. Unfortunately, I didn't notice this and may have done some damage during my "test" runs.

So, even with added drive oil the rattling is consistent and reliably reporduced at 1900 RPM whether with WOT or slow gradual increase. Once it hits 1900 RPM, the rattle begins and only gets worse. It sounds like its coming from right near the starter, lower port-side of the carb'd 5.7L merc.

My mechanic will be pulling the drive during winterizing and is convinced it will have to be rebuilt. He does also plan on compression testing the cylinders though.

Thoughts?

Re: Merc 5.7 engine rattling after sitting 1 month

If there was still any oil in the drive oil reservoir, then the drive was also still full of oil. It sounds like it was just sloshing around so the buzzer would go off intermittently. The buzzer would have been constantly screaming without shutting off if the reservoir were empty. The buzzer is triggered by the level of oil, it's NOT a "drive oil pressure" buzzer.

It sounds like its coming from right near the starter, lower port-side of the carb'd 5.7L merc.

Hopefully you have port and starboard mixed up. Either that or your engine is installed backwards. The starter on a 5.7 should be on the starboard (right side of the boat when looking at the boat from behind) side of the engine.

Hard to diagnose a noise over the internet. Could be lots of things, either engine or drive related. I wouldn't let anyone rebuild the outdrive until you verify what it is.

It's not too unusual to have to top up the outdrive resorvoir once per season or so. You could always have a pressure test done on the outdrive to see if it needed re-sealing.

Nobody else said it so I guess I will,

1900RPMS is really to low for detonation unless your timing is way off, and if it was, you certainly would not be getting full RPMS out of the motor.

Sounds basic I know, but have you checked the engine oil yet? Check it for water in it, but also check the level of it. If your to high you start milkshaking (technical term there, meh) the oil (causing it to foam up) and the ticking you here is because the lifters collapsed. It would also account for low oil pressure.

PS~ Low oil pressure alarm and the drive oil alarm are 2 different things. If your shutting the engine off and checking the lube monitor, topping it off, and then starting the boat back up me thinks what your actually doing is letting the foam condense back into oil, and hence you have oil pressure back.

Let us know how you make out.

Re: Merc 5.7 engine rattling after sitting 1 month

Thanks for the continued input.

Yes, I got my sides confused. I meant starboard side of the engine, not port.

Also, in the first post I mentioned that the oil is normal appearance and at the full mark on dipstick once warmed up to 160.

Boat also now runs fine in neutral and low RPMs, no stalling or sputtering. Makes me think timing is not that far off, if at all. Of course I'll have that checked.

The main factor here is that she sat for 1 month then did this on the first time out. Otherwise than that, ran really well up until tying her up for that 4 weeks. really odd

Batteries both new beginning of last season and I only check oil on any of my vehicles (boat, daily driver, motorocycle and track car) after they've come to operating temp. :)

I also tend to think 1900 RPM is awful low for detonation. Could it be a clogged carb just not delivering fuel?

I realize that this doesn't answer your question or problem... but you need to get out of the habit of only checking the oil after it has been warmed up. You can check it again after it has warmed up... but if there is a problem and the oil is low before starting for whatever reason, (like a rusted oil pan leaking out all your oil), you can create all sorts of problems for yourself.
