Re: Merc 65hp on a Jet Star? (now with pictures!)

Thanks

Banana kept the orig steering, but there was one I read through several months ago that had it all figured out.

I have been going through the restoration threads searching for it, but I think I have it mostly figured out now (manual was a huge help, thanks!)...

I think I'll try the Uflex steering a try, looks to be just a bit s maller than the teleflex rotary steering, and there is a 20 degree wedge kit available that says it's for that unit... :)

And I dropped by home depot and picked up about $40 worth of aluminum, some sheets and angle, I managed to muck to gether a new transom cap and glued it on with 5200...

I wonder how long it will take 5200 to dry in this cold...

Do you recall the size of your steering wheel?

I'm seeing some nice used ones on ebay, ranging from 14 - 16in...

Once I get paid for some work I did I will pull the trigger on some more parts :D

And the new trailer I'm going to use

Needs work on the bunks, new rollers and some paint, right now its covered with a rust colored primer (done by prev owner).

Looks like a good solid trailer, should be nice when you get it fixed up.

And in true bottom feeder style

I present my $10 trolling motor, complete with gas tank taken from a snow blower my father-in-law was going to toss in the garbage can. :D

I had it running pretty good, but I really only took it out twice before I got my $40 mercury trolling motor :)

the final time it ran flawless for most of the trip, but at after about 2hrs of it pushing me around it started randomly backfiring and dieing...
it would start right up, run for another 15min or so, then die again...

Never took the time to figure out what happened since I got the merc 9.8 hp

Its a really solid trailer, and tows very nicely!

its even nice pushing around the yard, I can't wait to start using it.

once I get the garage cleaned up I need to see if I can get it in there and close the door.. if I can I can heat it up and start doing some painting...

Re: Merc 65hp on a Jet Star? (now with pictures!)

and my current trailer has some serious issues
first the wheels/hubs have some bad side to side slop

and this is my bandaid fix to my bunks... red circled shows where I forced a block under the bunk to support it...
DSCF0098.jpg

other than that, the trailer is falling apart, the weld that holds on the coil spring is giving out... and I'm waiting for it to give out totally...

luckly I have a lake just a few miles away.
takes 2 gallons in my suv for a round trip, including launching the boat :D:cool:

I did not dare to go much further with the trailer at the end of the season...

And I was rushing right before the big wind storm hit (100mph winds in some areas, not normal around here!)
I got it stowed under the deck just before the storm rolled in

I had been using it to check the height of the transom while fitting it.

this engine has been great, two seasons and 0 problems, always started up great and ran flawless.

I plan on cleaning it up, maybe a fresh coat of paint and hang up in the garage as a backup.

I have been keeping an eye open for a starcraft cabin cruiser; I think it would work better with the family in the long run.

in my casual search I ran into a starchief, but its a little out of my price range right now (2100)

looks good mostly, but it could use a new paint job, and its missing the top windshield...

Last night I ran into what looked like a starcraft SS mid to late 70's I would guess...

Asking $700 with a running mercury something...

My wife had to slap me around a bit to get me to come to my senses, but it sold in under 2hrs :(

It did not need that much!
Paint, floors, transom...
Interior work...

They do that some times, Gibbles. Do I see some trailer re-hab in your future? BTW - I like the new iboats feature with [OP] after the OP's nick.

Yes, that other trailer is better in many ways, here pretty soon I will start going through it.

and it looks like my boat will fit in the garage with the trailer if I move my work bench, so here shortly I will put the finishing touches on it, mount the engine and start working on the floor and steering :)

And last night I borrowed my brother-in-laws propane heater, I have that hooked up and warming the garage while the epoxy dries...
not sure what the part is called, but its the part on the outer hull where the engine mounts...

and I'm out of hardner, I will finish the transom corners & corner cap when I buy another batch for the floors... :D

And I bought the brass transom drain tubes, I thought I had everything figured out...

but then I realized I cannot roll the ends over with the splash well in place.

I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with that, or maybe I should look into the plastic ones?

Gib - WoodonGlass has a method for rolling the tubes. I have it bookmarked somewhere. Give me a few. It's simple.
