hey all,

well last year had to pull a prestolite distributor out of our 888 only to find out the weights/ springs / bushings for the weights had been rusted and basically destroyed. by some luck I found another distributor online but the one I got is an autolite. assuming the shaft and everything else fits in ok...any drawback to the brand change? If I absolutely have to I can return it..but prefer not to. thoughts?

I may be able to... the distributor was pulled from a 302 888 trojan boat.

Merc used 4 different distributors in 888's Mallory, Prestolite, Autolite, and Mercury marine. If yours is marine it should work.

Re: merc 888 distributor swap

well here I am at 3 in the morning..just got back home. had a chance to compare the two...exact same specs as far as gear/shaft/seal location... so I should be good. lets all hope it works. interesting thing I noticed is the the new (um older) distributor has a nice pop to it as you rotate the shaft..one thing I noticed the old one just didn't have ..im assuming the rubbing block was just about done. maybe one of these days I will get a dizzy for it and I will be allllll set. for now..I will just have to bide my time and be happy I found something to stick in the hole.

hey I was wondering..I didn't disturb the engine when I took out the old distributor (i had marked the old one against the engine) any easy way to get the new one in place easily so its just a matter of minor timing? I want to just make my job as simple as possible.
