Good morn'in all, need alittle help with removing my impeller on my 1991 115 merc jet pump.I spent most of yesterday attempting to remove the impeller off my jet pump with no success!!!The shoe came off w/no problem and the nut holding on the impeller,I cleaned off the theads and sprayed w/lube,did some prying w/a couple pieces of pine wood blocks as sugguested on (Outboard jets Inc)also heated with a heat gun, but still can seem to get off the impellar.Im going to bring a 3 arm puuler home tonight from my work and attempt putting some slight presure on the impellar and see if that helps.Any other help would be graetly appreciated,Thanks in advance.Oh forgot to mention,I'm doing this to adjust my clearance on my impellar.

I use oxy/acetylene and just heat it till the plastic bushing melts. do it all the time. make sure you properly adjust the impeller to wear ring clearence on reassembly.

Re: merc jet pump impeller removal???

Thanks for the reply rb,I hooked up a 3prong puller, heated it w/heatgun and a small torch at the same time, also wedged in 3 pieces of wood at the impellar, still did not come off!!!I stopped at that point, didn't want to break impellar.I'll try more heat after fishing season closes for salmon.Just sharpening the edges of the impellar made a 90% difference on takeoff.I need to order a new shoe insert, mines pitted pretty bad.Any suggestions on where best place to buy one? Thanks again for your help,Bruce.......

Re: merc jet pump impeller removal???

Nodakr: I can't help with your problem - my jet impellor slides right off. I remember with my old inboard jet, it was an expensive bear to get off. I'd bought the boat used from a guy who ran it in salt water and didn't do very good maintenance. The impellor was was stuck to the drive shaft and it took a pro quite a while ($$) to get it off. I know that the solution was heat and force. Also, I had to replace that impellor ($$), possibly because it was stuck, but mainly because it was abused and worn out (aluminum). Good reason to remove it every year I guess, which is what I do with my outboard jet. I make a routine of removing, touching up/sharpening and re-spacing - similar to prop routine maintenance to avoid being stuck.

I'd try giving Outboard Jets a call and talk to a tech. I've done that in the past for other questions and they were very helpful. Also, if the Moderators think it's OK, re-post this question in the Outboard nonrepair forum. This question is not specific to Mercury, but any/all outboard jets. I think it's a great question and am interested in the solution for future reference!

Not sure what you mean by "shoe insert"...maybe your wear ring was retro-fitted with an insert? If its just the one peice aluminum wear ring I built mine up with a 2 part marine epoxy after reading posts on sportjet site about jb weld. We ran all summer, over 50 hours and its still perfect...tight clearance. You won't believe the performance increase this $10 improvement gives. Heres sportjet site, lots of good info on these motors-hope this link isn't breaking any rules:
http://www.sportjetworld.com/

Zamboni - I think he's got an outboard jet, not a Sportjet. I'm thinking he's referring to the aluminum wear ring which the outboard jets have. I don't know anything about how sportjets are maintained though, so I can't say if there are any similarities.

Re: merc jet pump impeller removal???

Sorry about the late reply and thanks for the imput.Zamboni, funny you mentioned JB weld, since I knew I was probably going to replace the sleeve in my shoe I mixed up some and applied a thin coat to cover the pit marks and smooth out the wear ring.Seemed to work pretty cool!!Oh and D,I didn't mention earlier,I just bought this motor and boat this spring from a older gentlemen that ran it on a river, where he lived, 5miles from the ocean and I assume he ran it in the bay area and did not do much adjustments to the impellar if any..I'm planning on researching this alittle more on the net before a second attempt and I'll let you know the outcome. One thing I will add, while working on the impellar the first time,I noticed a small, maybe 1/8in. hole half way up the impellar???I'm thinking about spraying some thread lube into it with the motor in the down position,a few days before I disasemble it,may help???Thanks again for all the help,Bruce......

Re: merc jet pump impeller removal???

is this an outboard jet or a sport jet?
if its the outboard jet oxy/acetylyne is about the only way.
also check the seals and bearings as well as the muffler tube for deterioration.
a corroded muffler will make you pull your hairs loose.
but do try outboard jet with the model number from your pump unit.
I have never seen a brass bushing on that shaft but anything is possible.
I usually just have to heat heat and keep heating and eventually it slips off.

Re: merc jet pump impeller removal???

rodbolt,........Thanks for the reply,I guess I would say it's a outboard jet, could send you a pic,if I knew how?I guess before thinking about getting parts,I need to try another heat removal.I'll give an update when I get to that point.Just thought that since I plan on keeping this motor as long as it's doing fine that It would be a good idea to have a new shoe sleeve or insert, impellar and bushing ready to install once I get the old one off.I could save the old impellar as a backup.....Oh,by the way,I took alook at your recent post, congradulation on your #of posts!!!I'm sure you have helped out alot of people.I did notice that at one point that you worked on Mazda's,I've been w/Mazda for going on 32 yrs.Just curious what yrs you worked on them.........

Nod,
Try to focus your heat on the impeller and not on the shaft. Remeber, your' trying to get the impeller to expand due to the heat. If you expand the shaft at the same time, you won't win.
