So I'm swapping out a 2004 5.0L Merc MPI for a Volvo 300 (see pic).

I hear tales of a mysterious adapter that wil allow me to plug the old boat-side Merc harness plug into the new Volvo engine-side plug.

Anybody done this?
Anybody know where to find these mysterious adapters?

The Volvo has a 14 pin harness plug, but I'm not sure about the Merc. Is there an easy way to find out about the merc harness plug without having easy access to the boat???

The Merc engine code is OWO18920

Being you have an 2004, your Mercruiser wiring harness cannon plug connector still ought to be a 10 pin design as the 14pin didn't seem to come out until late 2005 into 2006 if i recall correctly...This same timeframe of design change is when Mercruiser started using the cam shaft sensor plugged into the distributor assembly...Yours should not utilize the cam shaft sensor as the sensor inside the distributor assembly shouldn't have a wire harness plugged into it either.

Though at this time I'm not sure of Volvo Penta's newest harness end plug connector design is but to start out with, Search online mercruiser 10 pin to 14 pin cannon plug connector as it will look something like this,
