the engine is leaking water pretty bad when running . when the engine is off just drips. down cylinder block. I found the manifold gasket online I was wondering if the mounting bolts are torque to yield so I know if I need new mounting kit. thanks for the advice.. sam

Ayuh,.... The 165 4 cylinder, or 6 cylinder,..??

No torque to yield bolts are used anywhere on yer boat...

I'd sooner think you've got a cracked block,... Water doesn't pass through the intake manifold gasket...

inline 6 . you think it can be a head gasket . the motor runs fine if water was getting in there it wouldn't really run. its coming from on between the exhaust and block somewhere high near the cylinder head where you can't just see in front of you.. I was under the motor with a flash light and you still couldn't tell where it was exactly

I'm with Bond-o on this one. It doesn't sound like a gasket problem. I would suggest pulling the manifold off and then you will be able to have a better look at the head - and manifold - to see if either one or both are the problem.

Very common for those blocks to crack down below the centre core plug on the post side of the engine. You need to pull the manifold and then use overlapping cast iron 'rivets' to 'stitch' the crack... I would suspect the block has had an overheat. The other place they go is the port side front head bolt hole down to the top water pump mounting bolt.....

Hi Guys:

I agree with the previous posts, every cracked inline 6 block I've seen has cracked laterally just below the manifold. In order to inspect you have to pull the manifold. The symptoms describe a crack not a gasket leak! Either weld/stitch/repair the block or get a new block. I guess you know cast iron is very hard to repair,eh? Good Luck;

That looks like freeze damage... If you like the hull, I'd be looking for either a replacement block, or a complete engine.... Or even a donor boat with a half reasonable engine worth rebuilding. Try to sell it like that and you might get scrap value...

Dang man... Gotta be super diligent in winterizing these raw water cooled motors.

That looks all to familiar to my MErc 165. Mine ran but was getting water in the oil hence there was an internal crack as well. Maybe you could use a JB weld approach that is if it's not getting water in the oil??? I'm on the look out for a donor boat......

Ayuh,... Are ya gettin' water in the oil,..??

If not,... Epoxy it up, 'n go boatin'...

If so,.. Find another motor...

Bond -o what kind of epoxy would you recommend.. checked the oil its clean... and would my approach be to drebel a v notch where cracked drill pilot hole on either side of crack so it doesn't continue to crack then fill with the epoxy..
