Mercruiser 260 riser question..

Just got my 87 Glastron Carlson CVX-18 running after it had been sitting for about 7-8 years. Lot's of slag/rust exiting the exhaust, but finally cleared up after running for about 40 minutes. No leaks, internal or external, to note after running. Engine maintains a solid 160 degree water temp at 1500 RPM and will climb to 170-175 at idle and maintain.

Should I be concerned with the wall remaining wall thickness of the riser? Never been used in salt water. Thanks in advance.

Re: Mercruiser 260 riser question..

Thanks Bondo,

It's been a crash course learning about Mercruiser's the past week or so. Now that the engine is running well, I think I need to check the adjustment of the lower shift cable where it enters the cam for the engine cut out for shifting into gear. It seems to be a rough transition when it goes into gear. I know the circuit is working well because I can get the engine to quit when acutating the microswitch at the cam. Could use another set of eye's though!

Ayuh,... It needs to be shifted Into gear, Briskly....

The shift switch Only works when coming Out of gear, 'n Only when the prop is In the water....

You DID replace the impeller as part of the "getting it running" right? If not you need to stop running it until you do or you will have a lot of disassembly to do to find ALL the parts of the old impeller.

Plan on impeller, gimbal bearing and re-seal R&R next. I did not know the engine status prior to the most recent run and did not want to spend good money after bad. I am in agreement, no more running until I have taken care of impeller and re-seal. Thanks for the advice, well taken.

It's an 87 It's set for 6-7 years.Right now it seems to be ok but if you have the $$ change the manifold/riser.
23 years old it's time.Setting for 6-7 years in the air.Makes it rust faster.
Replacing the shift cable while you have the drive off is probably a good move too. That will be something you won't have to fix later.
Check the gimbal and the bellows. The impeller and oil too.
Installing a gear oil resivoir is something to look into.

Re: Mercruiser 260 riser question..

Once I get back to work, I'll have the money to start buying the more expensive parts and risers are on the short list. The fuel system is completely replaced from the fuel cell to the carb, with a carb rebuild (quadrajet). I know the issues with ethanol and point well taken. I am fortunate the engine was well taken care of, even though it sat for some time.
